Coaches can scream and yell and plead and explain but successful teams figure it out themselves and take ownership. That is still in process here. Maybe they'll figure it out and maybe they won't. Time will tell.
While I agree that it is ultimately in the players' hands, I think coaching is, and will always be, a critical component in a team's success. That's why the good ones are well paid and the bad ones are out of work.
As I said before, with a new coach and new players, it was bound to be two steps forward and one step back. Most of the players on the team have never played a single game with any of the other players on the team. The few returnees from last year's team are learning to play with an unusual number of new players. And all of the players are learning to play for a new coaching staff, and that staff has had only a handful of games to learn how their players perform.
Coming into the season, the players Coach Forbes signed had reputations as strong defensive players possessing great length. My concern was, where will the points come from? That concern has been somewhat allayed. Ge'Lawn Guyn has been a revelation, and I think T.J. Cromer will get better and better. A.J. is consistent and I am hopeful that Deuce Bello will find his niche. However, the defense -- the thing I wasn't worrying about -- is a concern.
Coach Forbes says he likes to recruit offense and teach defense. Apparently, he is confident he can do that. I am, too. As Just Buc said, "Time will tell," but in the meantime, I'm not going to live and die with every victory or defeat -- at least until the SoCon tournament.
