We're in, but how low can bowls go?
Interesting article on the CBS Sports website, some aspects of which could be promising for the Huskies, and some aspects back up MadDawgz saying bowls are worthless.

Consider these tidbits:
With two weeks left in the season, there are only 71 bowl-eligible teams -- those with at least six wins. The possibility remains that some bowls may have to take sub-.500 teams to fill out the bowl landscape now largely left unregulated by the NCAA.

Those involved generally believe the NCAA will settle on populating bowls with sub-.500 teams based on their rank in the Academic Progress Rate.

Forty bowls means more than 62 percent of FBS teams will go to the postseason. But how deserving will they be and will the public accept watching a 5-7 team.

What about the MAC?
Conferences most impacted at the moment are the Big Ten and Conference USA. Both leagues still have two bowl slots to fill. The ACC, Big 12 and Sun Belt have to fill one slot. The SEC already has filled 10 of its slots. The Pac-12 has nine bowl-eligible teams, two more than needed for its seven bowls.

I'm less worried about teams deserving a spot than by the fact that bowls are a scam.

The bowls are extremely watered down. While players like them, no one outside of a particular schools fanbase cares. Its like the NBA or NHL playoffs, everyone gets in.

I want an interesting matchup. If NIU vs NU or Illinois could happen I'd be happy. NIU vs UL Monroe.....not so much.

RE: We're in, but how low can bowls go?
This may sound a little Marxist and all, but teams that go undefeated, even if only in their conference, will tend to take wins away from teams that could have been bowl eligible. And if team sucks, they need to really suck.

Let's look at the MAC, for example. What if a team in each division plays on a higher level that everyone else in the division, who are fairly very competitive with each other. The two dominant teams are not scheduled to play each other either. So you get standings like following.

East................West
A...8-0...........H...8-0
B...4-4...........I...4-4
C...4-4...........J...3-5
D...3-5...........K...3-5
E...3-5...........L...3-5
F...3-5...........M...3-5
G...3-5

That would leave only two bowl eligible teams, unless teams B,C, or I can win enough games out of conference. The MAC would not be able to fill all other bowl spots. Do that to all the other conferences, and you could have a real bowl crisis.

The MAC needs teams A and H to lose a conference game, and MAC needs more losses from some 3-5 teams to fill their spots.

We are 8-4 and probably won't be the MAC champions. We probably don't have much leverage when it comes to negotiations, but I'm sure our AD will get us to the best bowl he can...

With a battered QB situation Boise or even the Illness are not who I want us to play. The next time we play the Illness, I want to beat them to a bloody friggin pulp. And then grind our cleats into them some more.

This is not the time to play either of those teams.

Would hate to face the Illness while we are depleted.

NIU secured a better bowl berth with the loss to Ohio, gotta love college football post season lol, just a joke. Probably chalk this up to another reason for bad weekday attendance. People are figuring out the games do not mean anything for post-season.

Unfortunately MD, the games -- as in attendance -- means something to the bowl people. Instead of an interesting match-up they'll take one that has at least one team that will bring fans and help the bottom line beyond all their corporate sponsors. Bowls are for the purpose of making money.

The bowl committees and the TV networks make money (and lots of it) off the bowl games. The money losers are the schools that play in the bowl games. Most of them lose big bucks by playing in the bowl games.
