First Down
The Tigers ran 24 first down plays yesterday:
15 runs
9 passes
Paxton Lynch was 6-9 on 1st down for 11 yards with no first down pass completion longer than 7 yards.
The 15 runs were for a total of 41 yards. Our longest first down play of the day was a Sam Craft run for 26 yards. If you subtract that out, we ran 14 times on 1st down for 15 yards.
Other than Craft, no player gained more than 6 yards on a 1st down run (Cooper, Henderson).
52 yards on 24 first down plays= 2.16 yards per play.
We were in 2nd and long (defined as more than 6 yards) on all but 4 first down plays.
Of our 24 first down plays, 7 lost yardage (5 runs, 2 passes)
We lost yardage on 29.16% of our first down plays.
That's a total killer.

RE: First Down
Said this all game. It is hard running an offense on essentially 2 downs.

This is a fair exercise if you compare other games too

RE: First Down
Here is what I think about the offense. We have the best QB we have had in what? IDK, maybe forever. Throw the dang ball, a lot. Maybe 50 times a game. When we had DeAngelo we ran him all the time. Now we have PL, so pass the ball as many times as possible. Of course it no longer matters for this year. But if PL just happens to come back next year (I know, he gone) but if he does, throw it, throw it, throw it. JMO.

RE: First Down
That's frankly not how we've been successful.
It's not easy to remember because PL is so good throwing the ball, but we're at our best when we can run the ball- especially edge plays, sweeps, draws, and counters. That just opens up so much of our down the field offense.

Of course, use the run game. But, while PL is here, use the pass first. The guy has a cannon, is accurate and mobile. Don't under utilize him. Use your strengths. Remember when Steve Matthews was QB under Stobart. He was very good but Stobart only threw 20-22 times a game. Use him while you have him.

I'd counter that running IS our strength...I'll look up numbers to verify...stand by...

RE: First Down
OK...So here are our rushing yards and YPC. Missouri State begrudgingly included. lol
Missouri State: 317 yards (5.3 ypc)- 63 points
Kansas: 281 (5.4)- 55 points
BGSU: 155 (3.1)- 44 points
Cincy: 158 (4.3)- 53 points
USF: 120 (3.1)- 24 points
Mississippi: 107 (2.6)- 37 points
Tulsa: 257 (4.9)- 66 points
Tulane: 223 (5.7)- 41 points
Navy: 133 (4.3)- 20 points
Houston: 212 (3.9)- 34 points
Temple: 76 (2.2)- 12 points
In our 8 wins we rushed for an average of 202.8 yards (3.375 ypc), in our 3 losses 140.33 (here's why stats are weird...lol (3.465 yards per carry)

YPC carry is not what tells the story...
YPC carry was poor against Ole Miss and we were in 3rd and long many times against Ole Miss But we made some great plays to convert 3rd and longs while stopping Ole Miss on 3rd and 4th and shorts.
The difference is now we are not converting those 3rd and longs and people want to complain. Nothing has really changed as far as play calling outside of the end result.

RE: First Down
As far as playcalling, it's a little deeper than just calling run/pass...types and timing of runs also matter. But here's our run/pass splits for the season. I'm also trying to find our average length of 3rd down.
Team Run/Pass
Missouri State 60/21
Kansas 52/27
BGSU 50/40
Cincy 37/36
USF 39/32
OM 41/53
Tulsa 52/44
Tulane 39/44
Navy 31/42
Houston 54/32
Temple 35/34
Season: 490/406
Average runs per game: 44.5
Average pass per game: 36.9
In 8 wins:
Average runs per game: 46.25
Average pass per game: 37.25
In 3 losses:
Average runs per game: 40
Average pass per game: 36
That may not seem like much, but statistically speaking, that's quite a large variance.

RE: First Down
I'd say that the strength of our team is balancing the run and pass to not allow opponents to load up on both.
Navy is a pain to prepare for and incredibly disciplined, so they were able to both score and defend. Tough game, big loss.
Houston didn't stop us at all, we didn't get in the end zone enough, but we moved the ball. The turnovers and 4th quarter collapse gifted that game to the Cougs.
Temple was different. They were able to stop the run without selling out and kept Memphis in front of them the whole passing game. By forcing 3 and 6+ and getting good pressure without blitzing while playing to defend the sticks, they were able to methodically shut down our offense in a exact inverse of how we usually beat people.
Our inability to get to 3 and 4 minus all day put too much of an onus on the passing game to constantly save 3 and longs. Temple stopped the run without committing extra tacklers to the box. If you can defend Memphis in the box without committing extra defenders, we will struggle.

He's not always accurate. He's had his spells in nearly every game of missing several throws in a row, for 2 or 3 series, then snapping out of it and being accurate. The last few games he hasn't snapped out of it all of a sudden like he did earlier. He had 2 very bad misses yesterday that I remember, then of course having at least 3 costly drops kills your offense too.

Yall expect too much from Lynch...
