RE: San Diego State game thread
Great game. San Diego is known for their defense, and they were tough, but we came through in the clutch. When the game was on the line, Josh stepped up and took over the game. He's the man. I was somewhat disturbed that we missed the front end of one and one's in the last minute. That could have cost us. But Johnson, Jr. hit two to end the scoring.
First time in years I can recall beating a good team on their home court. New coach. New era. Great win for our Trojans.

Stats: good, bad and ugly
For all the ballyhooed offense of the new system, it was defense and taking care of the ball that won this one. They shot 28% overall and 25% from the arc. We only turned the ball over 6 times. And it was a good thing we did not turn it over, because we got hammered on the boards 42-28. SDS had eleven offensive rebounds; we had only three. But it didn't matter because we won the turnover battle 16-6.
Our shooting was almost as bad as SDS's: 35% and 29%.

Thanks to his last-minute heroics, Hagins had a good night. 14 points. But what is even more impressive, he had 6 rebounds on a night we did very little on the boards. Ruttley came up almost as big, with 9 points and 7 rebounds. (I am going by the ESPN stats.) Mareik had 6 points, 4 boards. Johnson 6 points 5 boards.

We have a rebounding problem, Houston. Of our paltry 28 rebounds, Ruttley, Hagins and Johnson had 18 of them. Where were the big guys? But again, it didn't matter - tonight.

I don't care about the high-scoring game. My comment was meant to be sarcastic. Play tough defense, hit the boards, and take care of the ball, and if the score is in the 40's, I am completely happy. We did two of the three exceptionally well, and we won.

A lot of folks were excited because they thought Coach Beard was going to play "fun" basketball. It looks like instead he may play good basketball, and that is what I like.

Usually the term "ugly" as applied to basketball games means low-scoring, with low shooting percentages. I used it in that way. It is a standard description, and I used it in the way it is normally used.

And I normally use "ugly" as applied to fans that can't see the positives of a GREAT game......!!!!!!!

That maybe the 1st time that pappy has been called that.

Mr Beard you are new here. The core group of posters are 20 year season ticket holders and only want the best for the program.

We have watched a lot of grinder ball. We are ok with winning ball of any kind.

You lack the context of years of talking together to understand the loyalty to the program here. Yours is to your son and that's where it needs to be but try to understand there are just some things here you will find offensive due to the what we are rooting for and what you are rooting for.

I love being wrong! I was on the board thinking we'd get slaughtered. Never been happier to be wrong. Great game, great coaching job, great performances!

Mr. Basketball, lay off of michaelspappy. And he is, without a doubt, NOT a jerk.

Pappy, can't wait to see your thread for the next game!

You're the jerk. Every time you come on this board you're making some damn smart ass remark to somebody. If Coach Beard is your son as some have said, you better hope that most people don't hold it against him that his daddy is an a**h***e. If you think I've been too rough on you, hang on and I'll see if I can't do better.

I second that. He is one of the best fans we have ever had. He was being sarcastic. He is not necessarily a fan of run and gun gutterball (see the other team in NW Arkansas). He wants to see good solid basketball- good defense, protecting the ball on offense, etc. which is what we did today.

RE: San Diego State game thread
I have noticed one thing in motion offenses. Many times there is nobody under the boards on offense to rebound. That goes for our women's team also. I think it's just the nature of the offensive scheme. Players are moving around and not standing under the basket taking up space. I think we rebounded pretty well on the defensive end. San Diego State is known for their defense, and it was difficult finding open shots, so I applaud our team for being able to pull out a victory over a team who seldom loses at home. Believe me, the San Diego fans were shocked to lose to "Little Rock".

As I predicted prior to the season, Josh will be our go to guy when push comes to shove. This won't be the last time he'll do it this season. This win will give this team a big dose of confidence, and if they can keep winning, no matter how they do it, by the time we reach conference play, we'll be a formidable opponent. Hats off to Coach Beard and his staff. They pulled out a win hardly anyone thought we'd get this early in the season. We're going to get nothing but better as the year goes on. Who knows what we might accomplish. Go Trojans.

One major concern of my has been and continues to be that Josh will continue to be our "go-to guy". Sometimes he gets a good shot and pulls it off. Usually, it is like the game that knocked us out of the tourney last year. I was hoping other guys might get the big shot on occasion under Beard.

Even Michael Jordan didn't make them all. But there are some guys who have the cohones to want to take that last shot, and others don't. Josh will take it when he needs to, and he'll make some and miss some. that's just the nature of the beast.

On one hand, I share your concern. On the other, who would you want to take that role? Maybe, Ruttley can be that guy but it is hard for a first year player (even if he is a senior) to take that role.
