Coaching Transition From G5 to P5
All this talk about the latest hot coaches like Justin Fuente, Tom Herman, etc. made me think about how the recent crop of "hot" coaches have performed. I tried to find all of the coaches who moved from a G5 job to a P5 job between 2011 and 2013. That would give them 3-5 years on the job which is a reasonable timeframe to assess. So this would not include coaches like Charlie Strong (Louisville was G5 when he went to Texas) or Chris Petersen. They've only been at their schools for 2 years. In all honesty, they've struggled their first two years too.

This is what I have. I think I found everyone.

Steve Addazio – Temple to Boston College
ACC Record (8-15) BC Record (17-19)

Al Golden – Temple to Miami (Already Fired)

Larry Fedora – Southern Miss to North Carolina
ACC Record (19-11) UNC Record (30-18)

Dave Doeren – Northern Illinois to NC State
ACC Record (5-17) NCSU Record (17-18)

Tim Beckman – Toledo to Illinois (Already fired)

Randy Edsall – Connecticut to Maryland (Already fired)

Darrell Hazell – Kent State to Purdue
B1G Record (2-20) Purdue Record (6-28)

Sonny Dykes – Louisiana Tech to California
Pac12 Record (6-19) Cal Record (12-22)

Mike MacIntyre – San Jose St to Colorado
Pac12 Record (2-23) Colorado Record (10-25)

Gus Malzahn – Arkansas St to Auburn
SEC Record (13-10) Auburn Record (25-12)

Hugh Freeze – Arkansas St to Ole Miss
SEC Record (15-15) Ole Miss Record (31-18)

Butch Jones – Cincinnati to Tennessee
SEC Record (8-14) Tenn Record (18-17)

Kevin Sumlin – Houston to Texas A&M
SEC Record (16-14) A&M Record (35-14)

Sumlin and Malzahn had great first years, but have slid back to the pack recently. I also thought it was interesting that Sumlin hasn't lost outside of the SEC yet. Then I went and looked at his OOC scheduling. It's Bayloresque.

Larry Fedora has the best conference record and a decent overall record considering he had to deal with NCAA issues his first couple of years.

I think these examples show us coming from G5 to P5 for the "hot" or "up and coming" coach isn't a slam dunk by any stretch.

Randy Edsall didn't coach in the G5, and neither was Butch Jones.

Yeah I cheated on them a little bit since the Big East still existed... but their schools are G5 now so I counted them.

RE: Coaching Transition From G5 to P5
More important would be comparing this with assistant coaches that moved up to a P5 head coaching position. Also new coaches come in to rebuilding situations in most cases, often not having the personnel in place to implement their style of play. The first two or three years aren't usually pretty. Of course everyone wants instant results.
