UH is offering Tom Herman $3 million / 5 year contract
The former is called "scheming".
The latter, "coaching".

He seemed pretty inflexible and unwilling to adapt his system to fit the skills and capabilities of the personnel. He had Thor for half a year before he figured out how to use him.
A fair question would be whether anyone has used Thor properly since 2008. Perhaps that is credit to our coaching staff?

Thor has not been used properly because he has a unique skill set that does not particularly fit most predetermined schemes. Bill Belichick is the one guy in the NFL who has shown the willingness to modify schemes to make best use of personnel.

I think a Rice coach has to ask who are my best 22 athletes and decide that I'm not going to get beat with any of them sitting on the bench. I don't think I see that happening. I'm not privy to practices, so I don't know for sure, but that's what the product on the field looks like.

Anybody else find it interesting that as soon as they offered him the big contract, he lost?

Not so much. I think the team ran into a decent team in Uconn team and we're looking ahead to the big Navy game.

They've been escaping with a lot of close wins and were due to lose one. Memphis lost pretty big to Temple. I could see Navy winning next week, and if they beat Temple, getting that elite bowl.

Ha ha! You have revealed yourself, sir!

I knew you were a closet UH plant all along, what with your [disparagement of the Rice coaching staff / acceptance of the Rice coaching's staff poor performance]*.

Surprised people haven't talked more about Houston Coogin their Access Bowl chances again and the possible implications for CUSA. The Access Bowl is drawn from the G5 champs. Right now, I'd say Navy is in the driver's seat if they can win the AAC, however, if USF wins the AAC and WKU wins CUSA, WKU could be in the discussion, which could mean millions of dollars to CUSA. We could sure use that money.

I hope we are not that desperate, but Southern Miss sold their home game back to Nebraska for about $2M in order to fire Ellis Johnson.

Houston hasn't Cooged-it. yet. The winner of Houston vs Navy wins the western division of the AAC (Navy is in the West), and hosts the championship game against Temple/USF. The winner of the AAC will be the highest ranked G5 champion and will go to an access bowl. NIU is the only competition because they beat toledo and are in control of the MAC. If Toledo doesn't win the conference it doesn't matter what their ranking is. Also the AAC still has 3 teams, including Houston, ranked in the AP/coaches.

That said, I don't expect Houston to win this week. Houston could be starting a 3rd string RB and a hobbled 3rd string QB not to mention the 3 freshman on the O-line that have been starting for about 5 weeks now. 2 of those freshman on the O-line went out last week, but are expected back. This is the injury situation is the worst I've ever seen.

QB 1 - Ward - Questionable - ankle sprain
QB 2 - Shultz - Out for season - ACL tear
QB 3 - Postma - questionable - bone bruise on knee

RB 1 - Farrow - Questionable - Ankle sprain
RB 2 - Jackson - Out for season - broken Collar bone

LT - Thomas - Out for season- Ankle injury
OG - Johnson - Out for season - Knee surgery
OT - Dew - Out for season - Foot surgery
OG - Eloph - Probable - Concussion
OG - Freeman - probable - stinger

here at Rice, we have learned that no amount of injuries is ever an excuse for not winning any game.

Herman reportedly interviewing at South Carolina, timing TBD pending whether UH makes the AAC championship.

Whatever happens, I'm happy for Tom. He's done very well, and deservedly so. The more time passes, the more I come to the conclusion that the things I didn't like about him as OC were more Bailiff than Tom. Either that, or Tom has learned a lot in his subsequent stops along the way. Either way, the one thing I always did like about him is that he is just a very nice guy. Nice guys don't always finish last, and in Tom's case I'm glad.

Not all injury situations are equal.

Mississippi State in 2013 struggled without Dak Prescott and looked like a Top 10 team with him.

Rice in 2003 was a losing team without Kyle Herm and a winning team with him.

Wally Pipp goes down, Lou Gehrig steps in.

Peyton Manning goes down for the Colts, and they earn the right to draft Luck.

There are examples on both sides, an injury makes no difference at this position, a string of injuries results in a serious drop off in game performance for this team.

I'm pretty sure we all understand this, that it's not only one way.
