Karlgaard Podcast
Just heard Joe's Podcast. Doesn't look like Bailiff is in trouble. A lot of how good we've been with 3 straight bowls.

Figures. Disappointing, but it's the Rice way, delay the inevitable.

Best of luck to the marketing team. I guess we can hope Baylor buys a lot of tickets for revenue.

RE: Karlgaard Podcast
I'm starting to think that Karlgaard doesn't say anything about a given sport's future while that sport's season is in progress. That's not a criticism.

I'm with you, and that I wouldn't read too much into it at this moment.

I think only bad things can happen when the AD starts to publicly dis the coach. Plus, aren't votes of confidence often a sign of bad things to come for a coach in most sport organizations?

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. He's a professional and he's not going to show his hand for the public to see. That being said, I really don't think Bailiff is going anywhere. His job is probably pretty safe.

Bob, I think you're overreading into his comments. As I speculated after Saturday's embarrassment, I do think Joe has already made his own decision to part ways with Bailiff, but as was the case with Braun, no announcement will be made until the regular season is over. Not only does this give him a couple weeks to negotiate with DB about how the end will come about and in what form, but we have no one to replace him with for our final 2 games. I wouldn't be surprised if JK has not already had a very frank and direct conversation with DB.

We knew Braun was gone after the HBU game. The lead today was one of don't get upset with the season, but look at our successes. I'm fairly confident of one more year.

I agree, he would not have discussed the previous bowl seasons and instead would have said the generic, "all coaches are evaluated at the end of their season."

Still difficult to see a firing of a coach with 4 straight bowl games. How many programs are on a 4-bowl streak? If we lose to UTSA or Charlotte however... But if Joe mentioned our recent "success" or said something about how good we've been the past few seasons, then it's a good sign for DB. The whole point of the critics is that those bowl games mean little because we haven't beaten really good teams. If the AD thinks highly of reaching 3 or 4 bowl games in a row regardless of competition, then he'll stay.

If Karlgaard is pleased with current levels of success then all his talk about Top 25 and positioning the program for a P5 invite was just meaningless blather.

I agree, which is why I will move my support to basketball.

*sigh*

At some point I will figure out what a football coach managed to do to injure some of you so personally that you get mad when his boss doesn't throw him under the bus. Or whether y'all would think ritually sacrificing him to the Mayan/Aztec gods from the Turrell skyspace (or reasonable MOB-produced facsimile) during halftime of the Charlotte game was enough punishment for what he has apparently done to you.

(Disclaimer: I've been privately calling for him to go since the Western Kentucky game. Just don't have nearly the vitriol that some do.)

49 teams that went to a bowl in 2012-2013 also went to one in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. 53 teams were at least bowl-eligible in all three years.

Currently, of those aforementioned 53 teams that were at least bowl-eligible in all three years, 35 have already clinched bowl eligibility this season, 12 have a mathematical chance to still be bowl eligible this season and 6 have been eliminated from bowl eligibility this season. I define bowl eligibility as 6 or more wins.

I didn't delve into which of the 12 has a very likely / very unlikely chance to get to six wins by season's end.

Huh? Who's expressing anger at Karlgaard? I think you're misunderstanding. And if you want Bailiff gone, then you want him gone. What difference how you express that?

Because it's incredibly draining to read through page after page of heaping on someone. And reading debates on whether we've beaten anyone outside the bottom quartile, and whether or not we've plateaued (less of that recently), and whether our head football coach has permanently damaged the university, and whether someone on here (other than ruowls and nightowl) could do a better job coaching than our head football coach is nearly as much of a beating as trying to discuss politics with anyone.

At the same time, I care about my school and would like to discuss it with people. But there's not much discussion happening on the discussion boards anymore.

I wouldn't call it "anger" with Karlgaard. That was definitely poor choice of words on my part. Dissatisfaction would be better. I am incredibly dissatisfied with how this season has gone. I'm not dissatisfied by our athletic director discussing it the way he apparently has on the podcast (which I have not yet had an opportunity to listen to), according to posters here.

Having watched every game I could watch in my four years at Rice save one (conflict with Yom Kippur services), I've been in for the good (halftime at a bowl game in my hometown senior year was cool) and bad (watching UH slaughter Rice while I kept up with the Rangers throwing away the World Series on my phone). He's done. Or he should be. The massive vehemence with which people apparently need to denounce him is just draining.

I like my emotional beatings from sports to come from the sports, not the discussion of it.

I understand what you're saying, but you don't have to read the threads. I skip the ones I find tedious, while allowing that those on those threads apparently find them interesting.

I'm not dissatisfied with Karlgaard, and I regret any phrasing on my part that implied that I was.

It's a philosophy I'd like to embrace, and I admire that you can. I could try and just skip the tedious threads...except every thread seems to become one of those. The discussion of the Cal and USF games turned into a bit of a "how do you like Rhoades compared to Bailiff now" discussion. There was a brief bit where the EZF construction cam thread had a "doesn't matter until we fix the coach" discussion. Even the thread about "suppose we need a new coach, what would you like to see" turned into the Bailiff debate. There's not really anything *other* than tedious threads, at this point, unfortunately (with the exception of the basketball game ticket threads that I'd definitely be more interested in if I still lived in the same time zone as Rice).

And I didn't mean to suggest that you personally were. I was referring more to things like WIOwl's disappointment and moving-things-to-basketball-instead comments above. (Not meaning to call you out in particular, WIOwl, but you were the most obvious present example.) In fact, I agree with your take more than anyone else on this thread's take; I think he's keeping quiet while they're still in season.

DB could still be hired away. Remember Bill Peterson went 3-7-1 and was hired by...
the Houston Oilers. Iirc Bud gave him a "life time contract" but two years later had him declared legally dead

It's like physics: the unified thread theory :)
