We can say it's protesting Pastner, but the fact is, we don't have nearly as good of a fan base as many would like to think.

All fan bases are pretty much the same. Going to games takes money and time. If people are going to get a bad product then they are going to save their money and spend their time elsewhere, like with their family... This is in no way unique to Memphis. Arkansas has literally been giving tickets away at the ticket office before games the past few seasons...

Who cares about Arkansas?

It is 100% normal for attendance to decline before league play, it is 100% normal for teams that dog it to see their attendance fall the next year, it is 100% normal for a coach that has lost control of the program and THROWS multiple local players under the bus to see decreased attendance. It is 100% for fan bases that have lost all faith in a coach that is delusional to not waste their time and money going to games..

To sum it up, this is expected. Despite the delusional coach's statement that 8 or 9 people and their aliases were unhappy , with everyone else being satisfied, people are over Pastner.

The poor attendance was predicted and has nothing to do with the players.

The weather forecast has improved for this season. I suspect as the Tigers continue to win the shirtsleeve crowd will show up as always.

Win or lose. Rain or shine. If I still lived in Mempho, I'd be at football games and basketball games, every time they opened the doors.

I guess folks that still live there have a different way of looking at it?

I'd imagine they would really appreciate decent fan support regardless of what people think of their head coach.

"Fans" might not be no-shows because of the players but, the fact is, they should be showing up for the players.

They do not show up for either... They show up for the "product" or the "show". Bad product/show and attendance drops. Good product/show worth people's time and money and attendance goes up. Again, this is consistent throughout all sports, at all levels, and all parts of the country.

Look at any team that had a large level of success and then dropped off and track their attendance figures...

Yeah the poor attendance was evident on the video stream. That made me wonder if JP could ever win people back. My question isn't - does he have the ability to turn things around? But if he did somehow pull a 180 would people change their tune?

Either way, Memphis fans don't really like going to cupcake games.

They may not "change their tune" without a prolonged streak of success but they will still show up in the mean time...

That crowd last night was the worst I have seen in a long time. I knew when we reseated it was going to be a tough year but I did not in a million years expect that many empty seats at a Tiger basketball game.

It really is a shame too because they are really fun to watch.

Some of the empty seats are due to non-alum fans and/or businesses which have defected to the Grizzlies. It was bound to happen as soon as Tiger basketball Grizzlies became halfway respectable. I went into a slump and the don't know how much of a factor that is, but I personally know that it has happened in a few cases. The NBA is tough competition.

LOL

halfway respectable?

meaning as many consecutive playoff years as the Spurs and OKC..

It has happened in more than a few cases, just probably not with the local crowd you run with.

A major league pro sports team galvanizes a major metroplitan city more than a college team. There are no divided loyalties.

Unless of course you don't consider Memphis a major metropolitan city.

Sorry Gray Agenda, it was bound to happen. Didn't with the NFL, but has with the NBA.

You should be like most and cheer for all things MEMPHIS.

Any fan hates that this has happened, but no fan caused it to happen. The empty seats are an effect, not a cause.

I tend to agree with this. Just seems that support blows the way of the wind. If things are going well, life is good. Fall on hard times and the program gets ditched.

To whit: the poster who suggested Fuente's extension be rescinded.
