RE: UNC fans- any concern about Fedora?
Chizik is fine as a DC, in fact he is one of the best. You don't want him as a head coach. He's autocratic with his staff, tends to micromanage, and is not a disciplinarian with his players. His meticulous nature however is perfect for a coordinator position that doesn't have to meet the public (a weakness for him). He is not a people pleaser. I can't see him doing well at fundraising or routine meet & greets.

As for Virginia Tech you have many options to choose from. It's a step up for the Pitt coach. It would be a good spot for Richt. If you were really ballsy you go after Mike Leach. He's no smoozer at the cocktail party but he knows how to win with less if you let him build the program his way. But, he's anything but P.C. The Indiana coach has done wonders with less. If you want to go all the way to Texas then snag Art Briles. The feel is that Patterson will head to the PAC. But there are a lot of well qualified coaches out there who might be looking for a landing spot and might like the more laid back atmosphere at Blacksburg. You have access to major metropolitan areas without having to live in one. You have a history of keeping coaches and the recruiting grounds are under utilized for the home schools.

True, but if Texas didn't call he eventually has to move. Baylor is not a destination job. It is a rung on the ladder. Salary and exposure would make him move. If he proved himself elsewhere as well he can always run home to momma if Texas calls.

Baylor may be a destination job for him. He already makes over 4 million.

And he hasn't made it over the hump yet. The top jobs now pay closer to 7 and the perks are much higher at destination schools. What Baylor has done is quite impressive, but the upside is still out there. Right now Briles is regional. At an Oklahoma, North Carolina, or USC he becomes national news with national endorsements.

Who makes 7 mil besides Saban and Harbaugh? Nobody. There are only a handful that make 5 mil.

Art Briles strikes me as a person who doesn't care about the top brands. He is Baylor. They were able to build a new football stadium because of him. Baylor has had a Heisman Trophy winner. Frankly, the way they've been recruiting he doesn't need to go anywhere else.

Saban makes a lot more than 7 million. That's just his salary. All top jobs come with lots of speaking engagements, endorsements, etc. I thought you would know that.

You can't quantify the "extras" very well so we discuss salaries. Saban and Harbaugh are the only ones making close to 7 so your notion that the top jobs pay 7 is ridiculous. Art Briles will be 60 in two weeks. He's been in Texas his whole life. He built Baylor from the ground up. Why on earth would he leave a place where he could be king to start all over? The dude's not leaving the state of Texas unless he's forced out.

Just because something can not be quantified doesn't mean it isn't real or substantive. It just means that some things are still private information unless you want to spend an inordinate amount of time digging. As for Briles we'll see. Of course he likely wants to remain in Texas. But at 60 he would have no problem finding another gig. What I find ridiculous is your "absolute" claim that a man you do not know will absolutely remain in the state of Texas to coach. That is less knowable than Saban's perks.

Realistically Larry has not "bonded" with the Tar Heel fan base since he arrived in Chapel Hill, but fortunately in year 4 he is posting good numbers, recruiting is going very well, and Larry is starting to loosen up. He has even started admitting that he has made mistakes.
Yesterday it was announced that Carolina had approved an indoor practice facility. Any building project on the Carolina campus has to go through a laborious approval process because of restrictions by the Town of Chapel Hill.
I expect Larry will stay in Chapel Hill for 4 to six more years and wait for Oklahoma, Oklahoma State (where he was OC), Tejas, or A&M.

Hey JR, what's going on with Les Miles at LSU? ESPN is suggesting that he is on the hot seat & if he loses this weekend that he will be out. How would he do at an ACC school like VT or possibly NC if Fedora were to leave?

I can only go on past history. He's 60 years old and has never left the state. I have no reason to assume that will change.

I think he did a lot of self reflection in the off season. It also sounded like he's spending more time with his players getting to know more about them, even eating meals with them.

I think Larry would only leave for one of the schools you mentioned above. Those jobs are going to be tough. Stoops is only 55. Unless he leaves for the NFL, I don't see him leaving OK. Gundy is even younger and already coaching at his alma mater. The two interesting ones are the Texas gigs. All eyes are on the Horns to see what they do with Charlie Strong. If Strong starts having success, the flames will die down. If he has another year like his first two, I don't know if he makes it to year 4. The NFL has been targeting Sumlin for some time. Eventually he'll try it out. We just don't know when that will be.
