I focused on him a lot in yesterday's game. He is in 'no mans' land very often. Between 2 players but not defending either. I guess its just his instincts.

Shaq was in foul trouble so I would expect his defense to be soft for most of the game.
If we had a suitable backup for him I would still expect him to continue to play, since we really do not he needs to be careful.

macgar, that is a good point. A suitable backup at the 5 does play a role in Shaq aggressions or lack thereof, but he has been the same since his sophomore year with regards to defense. inexplicably it started during the Oklahoma state game in Orlando. This year, more than others though, he may be justified in playing softer defense. we just have to do something to offset it. some type of zone perhaps?

Honestly I do not think he understands how to play defense properly...So he essentially avoids contact when he is told not to get fouls (always been a foul machine) and after Tarik left we needed him to play.

All of our guys go for the spectacular plays (Steals and Blocks) instead of the workman type plays body position, boxing out and rebounding.

Those skills must be taught when required to become successful as the playing field becomes more level, as pure athleticism becomes less of an advantage. ...

These traits are instilled from coaching that are developers of the talent that is needed to excel over and above rest of the competition. ...These traits are NOT even established @ an AAU level, as it is mostly a glorified recreational league that is popularity driven
