The problem is that extra game in the conference championship, between Temple (presumably) and Navy/Houston. Winner of that game would vault us.

Apparently the playoff committee saw the Houston game as the blatant choke that it was and had mercy on us.

Or they saw us lose on the last play of the game, on the road, to a ranked and undefeated team. How far do you think a team losing in that situation should drop?

I'm sure all factors were considered.

As far as aspirations of winning the conference and going to a big bowl...

Yes those are gone.

I am pleasantly surprised - improves my confidence in the playoff selection. committee.

As for our bowl game, it will be interesting to see whether UofM chooses to give the players a vacation-resort reward (against a "G5" opponent before a small crowd) or the Birmingham Bowl (against the SEC before a sellout crowd). I have seen a recent prediction of the B'ham Bowl vs Auburn. Either way, I will definitely be there with as many family members as possible.

The access spot WILL GO TO.... A G5... Conference ... CHAMPION. PERIOD. It is in the contract.

BUT!!!! That does not preclude other G5 teams from being offered "at-large" positions in the NY6 bowls. But you better be WAY the eff up there. Like 8th or something like that. Our ceiling doesn't go that high with 2 losses.

That was my understanding as well.

But ESPN sees it differently...

That author is mistaken. As pointed out by Geo, the only way for us to make a New Years six bowl now is an at large spot. But we would probably have to be in the top 12 for that. Which isn't likely.

So asked this is a different thread on the similarily the same topic. Does the AP and Coaches Poll mean nothing now - meaning only the CFP poll is the only thing that matters?

Since neither the AP or Coaches poll affects the national championship I say they really don't mean much once the committee puts out their poll outside of public opinion.

Bottom of the page:

College Football Playoff

Quote:When not hosting semifinals, the Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowls will welcome displaced conference champions and the top-ranked champion from a non-contract conference. The highest-ranked available teams will fill any other berths. The selection committee will make the pairings.

Don't matter much. Just chatter. Anything like seeding, bowl placement, etc. that rely on rankings will use the CFP rankings.
