Ohio is the armpit of the East. The is the general view of people on the East Coast is the state is very economically depressed. Its a toilet with no culture. There are people there that don't eat anything beyond beef, ham, eggs and green vegetables.

If a kid from New Jersey can't get into any of the 1,000 big name schools on the East Coast, they'll send them to Ohio State as a safety option. The same applies for Illinois kids who are down to their last desperate option.

Then when that said kid returns back to his homeland of New Jersey or Illinois he is laughed at by taking that desperate last option......but nobody can doubt they have a really sweet football team. So the kid hides behind his team.

A really good football team makes OSU look like Alabama or LSU schools that don't have notable academics. Its embarrassing. OSU players traded in their rings for tattoos. That sounds like something Alabama players would do.

With Notre Dame they've got a mass following. People root for them because they went to a smaller catholic school that didn't have a team or are Irish. The team always has high standards and plays a national schedule. Wal-Mart fans for respectable reasons.

Yep.

I lived in Columbus for 12 years. As you said most of the grads are good people. My one friend used to tell me all the time how he hated the Wal-Mart fans because they made OSU look so bad.

Had one Wal-Mart fan in the office who used to sit at his desk and play the OSU fight song all day on Fridays before a game. He was one of the most obnoxious OSU fans you ever saw. Acted as if OSU was Harvard in the classroom and every sports program was the greatest in the country bar none. Best story was I was at a conference in California during the NCAA basketball tournament one year and met some peers from Lexington, KY. He actually tried to argue with them that OSU had a better basketball tradition than UK. The funny thing... dude was a Bowling Green grad. Never went to OSU.

You're all midwest 07-coffee3. That is a Californian's point of view, anyway.

The day Tide boosters won't pay for tattoos is the day UAT drops out of the SEC.

That is a neat fact. It's really interesting looking back at the older time periods.

My sister is traveling around the Dakotas on a mission trip and people there say Ohio isn't Midwest. I like the history here because it shows Ohio is in fact about the very definition of the Midwest. It was formed as part of the Northwest Ordinance. It was the western part of the country till people started moving further west and then the northwest became the Middle West and finally the Midwest.

It doesn't surprise me that people in the Dakotas think they're in the midwest.

The term is so abused.

It very clearly refers to the "middle" of when the country's northwestern corner was Chicago. (get it? Northwestern Univeristy!)

Dakotas are not midwest. They're North, North Central, Great Plains.

OU had the upper hand in the legal fight, but there was no way they were going to end up forcing Ohio State to drop all things it had been using Ohio for decades. The time had long passed for that.

OU is Ohio, but if a little kid says he wants Ohio to beat Michigan, everyone knows what he means and no one tells him he's wrong. The term might belong firstly to OU (as it should), but it does not and should not exclusively. No one is going to start calling Ohio State just Ohio in the news or on forums, but in the limited ways it is, it's perfectly acceptable.
Why bother with the THEE seems silly.

OSU's use of the word THE is a response to their losing the legal right to refer to themselves as Ohio. Its a petty way to say that there may be another university officially named Ohio, but they are THE university of the state of Ohio. Buckeye arrogance truly knows no limits.

Maybe the state of Ohio should've made Ohio U the land grant university of the state, instead of creating OH A&M College in Columbus.

But instead, this happened:

Quote:The initial idea of a manufacturing and agriculture university in central Ohio had been hindered in the 1870s by hostility from the state's agricultural interests and competition for resources from Ohio University, which was chartered by the Northwest Ordinance, and Miami University; although, these issues were dismissed by Republican stalwart Governor Rutherford B. Hayes. The Ohio State University was founded in 1870 as a land-grant university in with the Morrill Act of 1862 under the name of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The school was originally situated within a farming community located on the northern edge of Columbus. While some interests in the state had hoped that the new university would focus on matriculating students of various agricultural and mechanical disciplines, Governor Hayes manipulated both the university's location and its initial board of trustees towards a more comprehensive end. The university opened its doors to 24 students on September 17, 1873. In 1878, the first class of six men graduated. The first woman graduated the following year.[8] Also in 1878, in light of its expanded focus, the college permanently changed its name to the now-familiar "The Ohio State University", with "The" as part of its official name.[9]

Ohio State began accepting graduate students in the 1880s, and in 1891, the school saw the founding of its law school, Moritz College of Law. It would later acquire colleges of medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, commerce, and journalism in subsequent years. In 1916, Ohio State was elected into membership in the Association of American Universities.

Time to move on with your life.

Of note there is a Horseshoe casino in Cleveland. As far as I know they did not sue over that one.

As for Ohio State they have been known to go after other universities as well. OSU tried to hinder Kent State's development in its early years though eventually Kent got around it.

Are folks lookin' too far afield here? Don't those Bearcatters have an arena that is at least unofficially nicknamed The Shoe. Maybe has nothing to do w/ Ohio St., at all...and is more locally oriented since it's in Cincy after all..?

I just moved to California. At my work orientation, a speaker asked, "Who's from the West Coast? (raised hands). Who's from the East Coast? (other raised hands). Ok, so the rest of you are from other countries." And this lady had a graduate degree.

The Eastern Dakotas are Midwest. Sioux Falls is practically Iowa in every sense, and I think that's the biggest city in SD. Fargo acts & talks like a suburb of Minneapolis.

IMO Midwest is a line from Fargo to Wichita, then a line from to Springfield, MO and follow the edge of the Ozarks East until you hit Mississippi, then draw a line to Evansville (i.e. cut off extreme southern Illinois). Go to where the Ohio River ends Pittsburgh and head North to Canada. If you're being generous, also add in Buffalo & Rochester (I was born in Rochester and it's practically the same as Flint or Grand Rapids).
