This year's seeding of the Zips was shocking. In a good way. My best guess was the committee's recognition of Akron taking on all comers OOC, playing them both home and away.
Maybe they finally admitted that Akron was good.
There is a lot of talk on zipsnation about the seeding.
Sounds like it is a combination of things:
1. The rugged nonconference schedule (Akron was 3-1-1 against top 16 teams and most on the road).
2. The MAC had a representative on the committee (which doesnt always seem to be the case).
3. Akron's "brand" has finally reached elite status. A national title and national runner up in the last six years helps. Plus, all you have to do is look to the US men's national team to see two former Zips on it (Akron is the only college to have more than one). Plus, I believe the school still has more MLS first rounders than any other over the last 7-8 years.
4. The committee did make up for the past screw jobs the last couple years that may have thwarted a couple more potential deep runs.
Obviously, I'm a UA alum so I want to see a run to the title. That would further boost Akron's status, and could also help the MAC's profile. Even if Akron continues to be the marquee program in the league, the MAC needs more competition. Other coaches could use the "you'll get a chance at knocking off the top dog in the country" as a recruiting angle to try and get better players.
