Are there any good bakeries down south, deep fried donuts, notwithstanding? Steak places in the south, outside of Texas, pale in comparison to their northern counterparts. Go to a place like Plaza III in KC or 5 o'clock steakhouse in Milwaukee and compare it to the seared fat you get in Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami or Orlando. Ponderosa would be a 5 star restaurant in the south. Then, you have the range of food offerings in the north. What does the south offer that can compare to a Chicago Italian Beef or slice of NY pizza? BTW, the west coast is nothing special either. Yes, you have pockets of great food in LA and SF, but cities like San Jose and Phoenix offer pretty much nothing.

Face it, NY is the food mecca of the country. There is NY and everyone else. Chicago is a distant second. The large metro areas on the east coast and the midwest all have the strengths. You can't compare a Charlotte or Nashville to cities like KC, Philly or even Milwaukee. The range and quality of the food up north is far superior (of course, with the exception of ribs and cajun food).

Question: Why would you want hard rolls? Do you miss the army?

If you are serious, google it. One of life's simple pleasures.

After about a 6 hour trip you might be seated by 11PM and hopefully finish your meal sometimes around midnight. Then you can drive back to Syracuse and as you're arriving back home at sunrise, you can cap the day off with breakfast at Denny's. You may as well include San Francisco as an ACC city too, since you can fly there in about the same time as it takes you to drive to NYC. Makes about as much sense.

Agree, Syracuse is not a suburb or close to NYC. Really can't claim NYC. At least Rutgers is about a 30 min drive to the city without traffic, and the food from Northern & Central NJ mimics NYC culturally.

Syracuse claiming NYC is like Rutgers or UNC claiming Washington DC.

Agree with most of your commentary here, but San Jose has awesome food. Its all ethnic, much like Queens.

My favorite Food in Cali...is Santa Maria Style BBQ...tri-tips smoked over oak no sauce needed.

That's great stuff. If you're ever driving through there, this place has a fantastic tri-tip sandwich: http://ranchonipomobbq.com/

I think Syracuse claims New York State, not NYC itself though they probably don't mind the implication.

Quite.

Which is clearly why Rutgers was invited to the Big Ten ... so the great "NY Style" vs "Chicago Style" pizza debate would not interfere with the Big Ten being the best P5 Pizza Conference.

I haven't had Quad City Style, but I'm picking New Haven's "apizza" style over the other three.

Hahahahaha As someone who is from Louisiana and has traveled all over the country, its hilarious that people actually think that food is better in the north. I will give you that you have pizza and hot dogs down to a science but I dont consider that fine cuisine. Southern Coastal states have pretty much the best of just about whatever flavor you prefer. Seafood, homecooking, bbq, mexican etc. I agree that you have a wide range of options in places like New York where you have very diverse ethnic backgrounds but no sir, you do not have the best food. Hands down New Orleans is the best city in the states for any type of food you dont buy at chain resturants such as pizza haha just laughable. Pizza, hot dogs and sandwiches thats the best alrgiht

Hank that was the intent.

Now some local favorites near Syracuse

Salt Potatoes...the salt brine cooks them differently and the inside is creamier

Spiedies (beef, lamb or chicken)
great at tailgates

Chicken Riggies..the heat of the sauce makes the difference

Hofmann Coneys...the best should be served on a New England Roll with Spicy Brown Mustard

The Big Ten has the best corridor of Pizza.

Central/South Jersey also have their own style, as does Brooklyn. North Jersey some argue has better pizza than the city as well.

Let's See:

Texas Beef Brisket
Louisiana Gumbo
Missouri St. Louis Ribs
Alabama Pecan Pie
Georgia Peach Shortcakes
Florida Key Lime Pie
Tennessee Memphis BBQ
Mississippi Mud Pie
South Carolina Pulled Pork

and wash it all down with Kentucky Bourbon and Arkansas Shine!

It might kill me but that would be one helluva feast!

I had these when I went upstate and I mentioned papas canarias (a Spanish dish that's pretty much the same) to people and nobody knew what they were, I looked it up after and it seems like they were invented independently of one another, which I thought was interesting, I understand that there's historically a lot of salt production locally though.

One upstate oddity that I think is funny (it's not funny) is that chicken francese, which seems to be sold in every Italian restaurant near New York is, despite being an Italian word for French, from neither of those countries but from Rochester.

I may have missed it, but nobody seems to have mentioned buffalo wings and this is a sports forum, so upstate New York has to win. How many people eat gumbo while they watch a game?

And I agree with whoever said that bread down south sucks. It does, big time. Even so bread in the north, bagels aside, suck a big one compared to Europe. I think that's why Americans overcompensate with so much filling in a sandwich, the bread is generally terrible. That said, there are some places in NYC that make unbelievable sandwiches. Brooklyn I'm looking at you.
