This is your playoff
Alabama vs. Oklahoma/Oklahoma State/Baylor/TCU/Notre Dame
Clemson/North Carolina vs. Ohio State/Iowa/Michigan State

It won't be that exactly, but that's basically the structure, and those are the teams

Alabama at #1
The Big 10 Champ is an unofficial lock

And then it's a dogfight between these teams:
The ACC Champ
The Big XII Champ
Notre Dame

Any other scenario with anyone else has too small a chance to really happen

You can put an undefeated Clemson as a lock. A 1-loss North Carolina won't make it in my opinion. And the B1G champ needs to be an undefeated OSU or Iowa, any other scenario and they get thrown in the "dogfight"

Michigan St is pretty safe now as well. They had 1 possible dagger- Utah- and that's gone now.

right now IMO you have.
SEC- Alabama/Florida
Big Ten- Ohio St/Iowa/Michigan St
Clemson
Oklahoma St/Oklahoma/Notre Dame

Sorry but TCU and Baylor are gonzo unless Notre Dame loses. Frankly, if Stanford wins out, they could get in over TCU or Baylor.

North Carolina's OOC Schedule:
Sept. 3: neutral site vs. South Carolina (L)
Sept. 12: vs. North Carolina A&T
Sept. 19: vs. Illinois
Sept. 26: vs. Delaware

You can't tell me that's a strong enough schedule to warrant consideration.

It's not. They won't have played a single top 25 team all year long. Think I saw #73 SOS.

The only locks if they win out are

Alabama
Clemson
Notre Dame
Ohio State/Iowa

The PAC 12 & Big 10 will be sitting on the side line with the AAC this year.

Florida is a lock if they win out, with wins over #14 FSU and #2 Alabama.

RE: This is your playoff
If an 8 team playoff happened today...

Every Power 5 Conference Champion receives an automatic bid.

The Highest Rated Champion (HRC) from the Group of 5 receives an automatic bid.
Each Conference Champion from the American, Conference USA, Mountain West, Mid-American, and Sun Belt will be evaluated...the highest rated team receives the bid.

Two At-Large bids for the next Highest Rated teams after the Conference Champions are taken out of consideration.

ACC CHAMPION: Clemson

BIG 12 CHAMPION: Oklahoma State

BIG TEN CHAMPION: Ohio State

PAC-12 CHAMPION: Stanford

SEC CHAMPION: Alabama

Go5 HRC: Houston

At-Large: Notre Dame

At-Large: Iowa

First Round:
#1 Clemson vs. #8 Houston

#2 Alabama vs. #7 Stanford

#3 Ohio State vs. #6 Oklahoma State

#4 Notre Dame vs. #5 Iowa

With this set up the committee gets their emphasis on winning your conference and the masses get the March Madness-Cinderella element that college football has been missing.
