Women's basketball opener
I think we can say we actually have a team this year. They won 76-71 but it was a lot more impressive then that. They were up by 17 in the 4th quarter and then started playing like the keystone cops (and the freshman/ sophs they mostly are) and made it close. I think coach needs to put them in a solid half court in that situation next time. She kept pressing and playing helter skelter and it almost got them.

They spurted from a 31-31 halftime tie with 15 unanswered points and kept it between a 15-20 point lead until their late game issues. I can't remember the last time a Kent team came out of the locker room and blew a team away. The too big, too slow and out of shape players are gone. Quickest team in years. I'll be interested to see them Tuesday against Wright St. since Colgate is not the best team we will see this year.

Tyra James is the real deal. When they need some height in the backcourt they had her bring the ball up. When she plays the 4 she looks like she can out quick most power forwards. She could be a real good MAC player. Lurkin got wide open shots since we had many more options (four in double figures) and scored 23. Also our point guard although a little small actually has to be guarded as she scored 8.

The only bad news was McKenna Stevens had knee surgery and was walking like a pirate with a wooden leg. Hopefully it wasn't as bad as it looked.

I'm sure we aren't off to winning 25 but this team is watchable and I would not be surprised to see them make double digits in wins. As they gain experience maybe they should be able to climb out of the MAC basement. There is some hope.

RE: Women's basketball opener
Compared to the past four year's, Kent's speed and quickness was outstanding.

The Flashes drove to the basket aggressively and had 27 (!) more foul shots than Colgate. They were 19 of 31. That's more foul shots than they had in any game last season.

Kent forced 25 turnovers to Colgate's 20 and scored six more points off turnovers (the margin of victory). Last year Kent's turnover margin was the opposite -- minus five per game. In last year's game against the Terriers, KSU had 23 turnovers, Colgate 18.

In that 15-0 run at the start of the third quarter, Kent had four steals -- three by guard Naddiyah Cross. After one steal, Cross drove to the basket and made a behind-the-back pass to Tyra James, who made a layup.

The 76 points were the most Kent State has ever scored under O'Banion.

Isn't it though. That's why they have almost been unwatchable the last three years. Offense was just a rumor. Pound the ball inside and turn it over was their main strategy. There finally appears to be some hope.
