Yep. That's the great thing about second guessing, you're never wrong if you go with the "other option".

His 5th string, freshman QB was so well prepared, they pretty much ran the same offense and went as fast or faster than usual.

Ryan Graham has some serious physical limitations, but his preparedness tonight and last Tuesday is a testament to him, Bob Cole, and the coaching staff as an entirety.

I could only imagine the massive boner fest in the national media if P.J. Fleck has his team in contention with 2 weeks left playing his 5th string QB.

Rod Carey: zero flash, a hell of a lot of substance. And he loves his wife.

NIU has looked good these past two weeks and a lot of credit has to go to Carey and his staff. I was particularly impressed with how well they handled Graham's unexpected insertion into the Toledo game. They eased him in, got him comfortable, then opened things up in the fourth quarter.

That said, I'm not sure that we so easily erase the questionable coaching decisions and unpreparedness that led to the three game losing earlier in the season which ruined our opportunity for an access bowl game.

Once again, I don't root for my NFL team to just make the playoffs - I want them to win the super bowl. Anything less is disappointing. Sure, winning the MAC is better than nothing, but isn't everyone's ultimate goal achieving OUR super bowl, which is that access bowl game?

Also, Seven, why the obsession with WMU? I don't understand why you're constantly going after the Broncos. We are the premiere mid-major in the nation - other teams should be jealous of OUR status, yet you consistently post things showing your jealousy of Fleck and WMU. For goodness sakes, let WMU fans be envious of us, don't let them think it's the other way around.

I agree about our QB.
Disagree about NIU automatically winning the MAC West.
I think that achieving an ACCess Bowl every year is aiming much too high.
AN NFL team pays market salaries to both coaches and players.
NIU pays its FB coaches bottom ten salaries in the NCAAF, yet some fans want a top 16 performance every year??
We do not pay coaches premiere mid-major salaries.
PJ makes double what Carey makes.

NIU's incredible 5 year streak + this years performance is incredible given NIU FB lack of financial resources. Every year that NIU wins the MAC west feels incredible.

In order to make an ACCess Bowl one needs to be lucky to have the opportunity to play top 10 teams and beat them. Something that does not happen every year.

Expecting NIU to beat OHIO State and get a perfect record every year is crazy thinking. [font=Trebuchet MS] I don't expect it, but let's say you are a Bears fan - they have won one super bowl, thirty years ago. Is it crazy thinking to root for them to win the super bowl each season?

Had NIU beaten BC and CMU we would not be in the hunt for an Access Bowl. Really? You're telling me a one loss NIU team with a tremendous showing on the road in Columbus isn't in the hunt for the access bowl? Perhaps not the drivers seat, but certainly in contention

Given that the MAC West has 4-5 good teams, 4 of which will be Bowl worthy, winning the MAC West is still a very special achievement. It's a terrific achievement, yet I don't see why we still all shouldn't aim for higher. Defining goals, aspirations, and setting expectations high are what successful people in life do. It's why some of us are successful and others work at Jewel/Osco.[b]

A victory over Toledo and a Bowl game is what I hope for a successful season. Again, using the Bears, so just beating the Packers would be your definition of success? Who cares about Toledo, they're just a team in our conference. I want to beat them no more or no less than any other team in our conference. This obsession with Toledo is just as silly as the obsession with Fleck. Let's beat everyone - that's what I want. Furthermore, simply reaching a bowl game doesn't charge my batteries. A six win team can reach a bowl game.

I get it, Vegas. Win the Super Bowl, win the World Series, etc. I understand setting the goals high. Have aspirations. But as fan, culminating these last ten years---the window for all that stuff is closed!!!

I read hear, all the time, get in a bigger conference. Not happening! With all the change in the past five years, and with our success, if we were ever a prime candidate it would have happened. We are just not a prime candidate. We are not a "Chicago" team, so don't think that conferences will grab NIU for the Chicago TV market. People watch our games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays because we are the only game on. Of course, we watch, but the masses don't because we are NIU.

I really believe we are the best team in the nation based on what we have, who we are, at what we portray. There is not a better mid major in the country with resources like ours.

I strongly believe our window closed the night we got trounced by Bowling Green in the MAC Championship two years ago. That one game cost us millions. An undefeated season, a second trip in a row to a BCS game (this time without any detractors), a date with Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl. That game was crushing on so many levels.

Attendance is quickly back down in the 13-16K range---you can't go big with that. You can't go big with other teams that can barely sniff .500 in the MAC.

Just not happening. I am really just enjoying the ride we are on and accepting the last 10-15 for what they are. I love thinking that nine wins is an "OK" year.

I do not disagree with your goals and vision---just not happening here. Enjoy what we have.

Pretty depressing post, and I think if you settle on what we have that's fine I guess but a lot of us on the board are not built that way. If you would have asked someone 10 years ago if NIU was capable or would obtain all the successes we have had in the recent past they would have said no way, are you on crack? Look at the changes not only in play but facilities and the like, we have come along way. Nobody in the football world takes NIU lightly, greatness does not always happen on our timeline. Keep the vision, work hard, believe in your roadmap, and trust it will happen.
I would never tell any of my kids to settle and enjoy what they have and that's your lot in life. NIU has come so far, and we have a ways to go, but it will happen if you believe it will and do the things that are necessary to build it. It's ok to believe in a dream, I have been told that's the secret to success.

Aiming high is what every NIU fan hopes for.
Tens years ago getting into a Bowl in order to get a one month of extra practice was a dream come true. In 2000 Toledo went 10-1(only loss was to WMU) and never got a Bowl game and in 2003 NIU went 10-2 and never got a Post season invite. Those successes together with activism opened up the Bowl opportunities we have today.
Coach Novak and many others campaigned vigorously to change the Bowl criteria system.

Today the horizon has opened up and a MAC team with 7 wins can get into a Bowl(in some cases a MAC team with 6 wins can get a post season invite.

Maybe in ten years time there will be a 16 team play-off system where the MAC champion has an automatic berth.
Then every MAC team will control its own destiny.
Under a fair, open and equal opportunity competitive system, it would then be possible for NIU to win a National title once every thirty years.

I hope and pray for a 16 team play-off system in Div 1a college football where the MAC champion gets a play off berth.

Under such a system Mid major programs like NIU would be positioned to recruit far better talent and dream of the supreme prize in Div1a college football.

P.S. A 1 loss NIU team, this season would have not stood a realistic chance of an ACCess Bowl invite.

Miami Ohio 2003 with Ben Roethlisberger was 12-1
1 loss - #8 Iowa team that beat Florida in the Outback Bowl.
Arguably the best Iowa team in 15 years.
victories over :
NU 44-17 (went Bowling)
Colorado State 41-21 (went Bowling)
Cincinnati
Beat a very good ranked Bowling Green team twice that year. BGSU went 11-3 that year. Only other loss to #4 OSU 17-24 whom it outplayed and lost with a dropped pass in the end-zone.
This game was far closer than the NIU/OSU game this year.
(Bowling Green beat #10 ranked NIU that year, a ranked Toledo team who massacred Penn State who went Bowling.)
MAC had several ranked teams that year. NIU, Toledo, BGSU and Marshall beat a top 5 team.(Best MAC OOC victory)
Miami Ohio went undefeated in the MAC with victories including Marshall.
Miami Ohio played in the GMAC Bowl against unranked Louisville, ended season 13-1 ranked #10, behind Iowa whom it had defeated.

This year NIU had no ranked P5 victories.
Exponents of this unfair Bowl will argue that:
Ohio State also beat Indiana by 7 points. B1G not as good as SEC. If OSU loses 1 game Iowa or MSU goes to play-offs.
NIU's strongest argument is losing to a top 5 team that has not been tested against another top 5 team.
BU had only 4 wins. Not a quality win

American Athletic Conference a far stronger conference.
Has 4 ranked teams with a ranked SEC victory.
WMU blown out by #3 team in the Sunbelt with 5 MAC wins.
MAC only had 1 good OOC victory Toledo against #18 Arkansas.

Kirk Herbstreit will argue that the MAC is the weakest conference and NIU was not tested except against Ohio State.
AAC team therefore gets Access Bowl.

Also ranking system is based on strength of schedule.(SOS)
Any MAC team has a very low probability of having the SOS to be ranked high enough to be placed in a major Bowl.
Without a 16 team play-off system any MAC team has a very low probability of having a fair chance at greatness in College FB.

Believe me, I'm no Carey apologist but, at least get your facts straight.

- two straight MAC west championships (working on a 3rd)
- 3-0 vs. Toledo
- three Big 10 victories (you might have trouble finding another MAC coach who has done that)
- .763 winning percentage (best for any NIU coach who's been here over 3 years)

Any MAC team has a very low probability of having the SOS to be ranked high enough to be placed in a major Bowl.
Without a 16 team play-off system any MAC team has a very low probability of having a fair chance at greatness in College FB.

Regarding Miami, there was no G5 spot in the BCS in 2003. they finished ranked 120th I believe and in todays system would have been in the access bowl.
I dont think you understand that the access bowl goes to the highest ranked G5 team...period, no qualification.

I'm fully expecting a rambling answer that makes zero sense.

Miami Ohio 2003 finished ranked #10.
True: "access bowl goes to the highest ranked G5 team...period, no qualification".
No way a 1 loss NIU team this year has the SOS needed to be ranked higher than
the best team in the American Athletic Conference.

Extremely disappointed in the Marshall game last year in Boca. CMU hung with WKU (who beat Marshall) in the Bahama Bowl in the most exciting game of the bowl season and we got destroyed. Marshall came to take care of business and we were there for a vacation...

RE: Coaching
Proving the perception that we are not in the same league with the Marshalls and Boises. Toledo goes onto beat Arkansas this year and we got destroyed last year. As far as I'm concerned it's the coaches not stepping up and game planning not to get destroyed instead of game planning to instill confidence in our players to get them to believe that we can win.

Bahaha. You're going to justify your Carey hate based on Toledo playing Arkansas this year and us playing Arkansas last year? That's funny.

But if you really want to, look deeper into the box score.

2014 NIU vs. Arkansas
NIU total offense - 303
Arkansas total offense - 427

2015 Toledo vs. Arkansas
Toledo total offense - 318
Arkansas total offense - 515

Look, NIU was better! 03-nerner

First problem, stop using the dumb ass transitive theory to assess coaching strength
