RE: Buffalo Thoughts
Some quotes:

“The turnovers weren’t good, but the [interception] was on me, that was a bad call,” NIU coach Rod Carey said of Graham, who also had a fumble in the third quarter. “Really, for his first entire game on the road, I was really, really happy.”

“That’s in his preparaton,” Carey said. “Joel’s preparation is really what’s making him what he is right now.”

RE: Buffalo Thoughts
-Great job by Graham in his first start. Most of his throws were good and I would say the pick 6 was not necessarily his fault. The DB completely sold out on the play, good coaching by Buffalo to expect the slant there. Graham didn't seem fazed by it at all though and came back with the nice ball to Golladay. Kenny G was wide open but give Graham credit, he did not miss him. Unlike early in the first quarter when Lurry tried to jump a route and got beat on a double move. That guy was wide open and Mr. Buffalo severely underthrew him. Graham also ran the ball well and he will learn better ball security from his fumble. It was a good decision to pull it down and run on that play, he just needs two hands on the ball.

-Speaking of quarterbacks that's great news that Coach Carey expects Hare back for spring ball as reported by Bill Baker.

-Golladay and Deucee were awesome last night, picking up the Tommylee slack. Both of those guys made plays all night.

-Ruka got a lot of playing time at right guard. We have some serious beef on that side when he and Scharping are in the game. The line played pretty well overall. You would have liked a better push on a couple of those fourth and shorts but Buffalo knew exactly what was coming too so give them credit.

-That Buffalo team is not bad at all. If they had one more good wideout they would be real tough. Speaking of wideouts that was a spectacular catch by McGill when he highpointed the ball in the endzone and kept it away from Smalls with one hand. You just have to tip your cap on that one.

-Speaking of Logan, yes he gets a lot of PI penalties but half of them are completely bogus. Last night was a case in point. On his second one down the right sideline he didn't even touch the guy. The wideout gave him a little push, that was it. Logan did nothing. The NCAA really needs to look at how they call those because I see a ridiculous PI penalty or two in every game I watch and it has gotten out of hand. Toledo's Norills got one the other night when all he did was brush up against the guy. Kent State lost to Buffalo last week when the refs bailed out Buffalo on 4th and 25 with a bad PI call. They have to let the DBs play a little. Touching is not interference, hand fighting is not interference, maintaining your position when you are between the receiver and the ball is not interference. It should be more like rebounding in basketball. The DB should be able to body up as long as he's not grabbing.

-Speaking of DBs those were some spectacular interceptions by our boys, all three of them. Super body control on the first two and great reflexes by Mayes on the last one.

-Compton had a pretty nice game last night. It was good to see him making plays.

-Bouagnon is over 1100 yards now and I think all of them are after contact. He has really ground it out this year. Joel has a chance for the best year by a running back (not quarterback) in the post-Wolfe era. He is at 1105 yards with at least three games to go. The top rushing years by a running back in recent years are:

1,388 Chad Spann 2010
1,245 Justin Anderson 2007
1,119 Cameron Stingily 2013
1,038 Chad Spann 2009

-Jordan Huff is up to 438 yards now and is basically doing what Bouagnon did last year. His future is bright.

-Golladay now has 60 catches for 942 yards (15.7 YPC) with 7 TDs. He has a chance to finish in the top five for number of catches in a single season. The list is:

91 Dave Petzke 1978
86 Tommylee 2013
77 PJ Fleck 2003
76 Hugh Rohrschneider 1962
75 Hugh Rohrschneider 1963
75 Martel Moore 2012

Golladay also has a chance to set the single season receiving yardage record. The leaders are:

1,215 Dave Petzke 1978
1,168 Justin McCariens 2000
1,083 Martel Moore 2012
1,074 Sam Hurd 2005
1,065 DaRon Brown 2014
1,036 Hugh Rohrschneider 1963
1,028 PJ Fleck 2003

That's all of the 1,000 yard receivers in NIU footbal history. Note that Petzke did his in 11 games.

-This game reminded me of the 2011 Buffalo game where we also got a big first half lead and let them back into it. They scored what would have been the tying touchdown late in the 4th but their kicker missed the extra point and we hung on for a 31-30 win. Sounds familiar. If they made their kicks last night it would have been a different game. I give Leipold credit for not airing out his kicker on the sideline. You see coaches do that all the time when the kicker is already a mess.

RE: Buffalo Thoughts
^^^^^ great post. Only thing I have to disagree with is Logan always seems to be tangled up early with the receivers and I'm surprised he doesn't get more calls against him. The whole 2nd half Buffalo seemed to be targeting whoever he was covering, unless it was just because they were open. [/align]

Good post- to balance the first post on this thread which I think was mostly wrong. Graham played very well, and his decision making seemed pretty darn good overall.

RE: Buffalo Thoughts
Last year would Drew overthrown that wide open TD to Kenny G?

No way there was 17K people in the stands - the first half it looked empty and the second half it was a ghost town

Right...which is why they say "paid attendance" and "actual crowd". If we actually sold 23K in tickets, then we could say that.

RE: Buffalo Thoughts
I know the offense is slimmed down a bit and safer with Graham in, but two big things I noticed:

- seemed like we were hiking the ball much quicker, like a few years ago. Was Graham just getting things lined up and ready better than Hare does at times? Or maybe it's just a result of the slimmed down playbook

- Graham is better than Hare at throwing the outside screens (at least after the first pass of the game which was awful and scared the heck out of me), he really got it out to the WR's quick and usually led them into their run. Hare struggles with this quite a bit, the WR's often have to catch it going backwards.

Now...I still wish we had Hare right now, but there are some positives with Graham.

Both of the RB's deserve all the praise, they were awesome.

I have been very impressed with Graham. We are in good hands. He seems like a very nice kid, too.

RE: Buffalo Thoughts
The outside blocking has changed too, the WR's aren't cutting their guy but staying up on them because most of the time it seemed as if the DB got up quickly from the block and made the play behind the line.

RE: Buffalo Thoughts
Was anyone else a nervous wreck with Graham running the ball so often? Every play I found myself praying he did not get injured. We are not in a good position back up wise if Graham goes down with an injury.

Overall I thought he did a nice job & I think he'll develop into one hell of a QB. Do we have the next Chandler Harnish coming up? 03-idea
