Women's basketball announces two signings - 5-9 shooting guard Tayler Bennett from Long Beach, CA (St. Anthony) and 6-1 forward Kendall Ellig from Flower Mound (Liberty Christian HS). Both are top 75 national recruits at their positions (shooting guard and power forward).

Men's basketball's release on its two signings (Ako Adams and Tim Harrison). Both are top 10 players in very good states (California and Virginia) so they probably get the edge on the women, but both sports seem to have a good duo to announce today.

Actually, volleyball might have an even better twosome - they signed a 6-2 hitter out of New Orleans who looks to me to be a top-50 national recruit type, and then a 5-7 libero from a volleyball powerhouse in Louisville I believe. Plus I thought they were signing another girl from north Houston somewhere?

ETA - VB released its signings too. The third girl is a 5-11 setter from Spring (Concordia Lutheran). If the Louisiana hitter/blocker and libero can play effectively right away (and it appears to be that case), then they definitely could be a top-25 squad next year. Plus they already have a commitment from one of Houston's top juniors for the class of 2017.

Assumption HS (Louisville) won state over the weekend I believe (and is my wife's HS). I'll see what I can find out.

I may have a mini-scoop here, because I haven't seen an official announcement. I was picking up my daughter up from her tennis lesson and caught Priya Niezgoda signing her NLI with Rice.

This page lists her as #31 nationally, and #4 in the Gulf States.

It's much more than competence that is driving this. Williams was competent - he finished his coaching career above .500.

This is what hiring someone from a well-respected program will do for you. This is what hiring someone who has the potential to be exceptional gets you.

So far Rhoades has shown he knows what he is doing, but Langley has yet to coach a game, so not sure if coaching plays a role quite yet.

I'm very excited for both men's and women's basketball this year, and I really like the way that JK is hiring. These are exciting hires because they both came from well known programs with a recent history of success - a success that they both likely had an instrumental role in.

Plus, plenty of good recruiters don't have the coaching chops (see Al Golden). There's just no reason to denigrate past coaches because of the success current ones are having.

I am going to hate basketball season if all we hear the entire time are comments that are obviously connected to DB or football in some way or another.
