Virginia beach arena moves forward
Looks like this will be coming to a head soon and there will be a vote on it soon.

Sounds like all 200 million will be picked up by the private company behind this.

I'm interested to see how this all plays out.

Hockey team? NBA team? Nothing?

What's the game plan? How will odu football/basketball make out in all of this?

Hmm...

Private equity guarantees it won't be nothing.

That 50 million is not going to the arena but rather to support infrastructure such as widened roads, and landscaping in the arena area. All of that money will come from tourism generated taxes.

HMMM... now there's a new concept. The city is actually considering widening the roads BEFORE it begins a project.

Good luck. From some reports I have been reading it seems as though a yes vote may be a fait acompli.

I'll drink to that! As a Realtor who for years, especially the 80' and 90's, n failed to grasp how VB and Chesapeake allowed developers to build massive housing areas along two lane roads!

There's no question that it would draw business away from the TED.

I think they've learned. The development over Grassfield (we were looking over there) the city made the developer leave a large chunk of land running from Cedar through to Shillelagh for the future. I asked them "is that intersection going nowhere going to cut through to Cedar?" "Maybe? The city wouldn't let them develop on it in case there is need for more roads" ... I was like.. high5!

True, but UCF manages to make it having the Magic right there in Orlando. We could make it work.

The way southern Chesapeake is developing there will always be a need for more roads. The problem with that is the city needs money to build more roads. If you look at the master transportation plan, the plan is nice but where does the money come from. The dominion blvd project is somewhere around 220 million and there is a study to develop that corridor into a mixed use corridor but that will be several years before any tax money is generated. Then that is not counting any tax break incentives that might be given to get some big name companies to move in or develop it.
Apparently there was a plan with the Army Core to widen the canal bridge over George Washington but they said we didn't have the other infrastructure in place, cedar and George Washington were only 2 lanes. The city made moses grandy and widened GW then army core decided the bridge was not there responsibility, only the canal was so that plan got delayed until Dominion is finished.

I don't see this having a big impact on The Ted. It may pull some shows that would have gone come to The Ted but really the show that will be going to the VB Arena will be larger shows that would have bypassed Hampton Roads because we don't have a building large enough. The venue that needs to be concerned is Scope. They will have the Ads and the MEAC Tournament and that is about it.

Thanks for the info! That's part of the reason why we decided to buy over on the other side of Hickory. I heard about the volume of permits for residential being submitted by contractors and developers and the growth about to happen over there. Wanted to avoid that chaos.

It will have a capacity of 18,000. Google the VB Arena, there are pics. of the renderings. Also google Pinnacle Bank Arena, it is a similar project, but it seats closer to 14K.
