Will you explain?

So the SEC network and the Big10 network are the epitome of what modern conference networks are going to look like. The PAC and Longhorn network are based on TV markets and not so much states just like the AAC's current deal. The BIG and the SEC get to charge a carriage fee to an entire state's cable subscribing population which is why they will never add from a current member state again (Programs like Texas being an exception). With the addition of A&M, the SEC gets to charge the entire state population of Texas a carriage fee which is why adding big population states is a homerun for anyone starting a conference network under the new structure. The also explains why adding Houston is great for the other conferences and terrible for the Big12. However this only applies if the Big12 has intentions on getting a conference network.

Network Games
ABC - #16 Florida St/#1 Clemson 3.2
FOX - #8 TCU/#14 Okla St 2.8
CBS - #18 Ole Miss/Ark 1.9

Cable Games
ESPN - #9 Iowa/Indiana 0.6
ESPN2 - #25 Houston/Cincy 2.9

Every other game had a team rated higher than Houston. Two games had both teams rated higher than Houston.

And we beat the Big 12 network game. Beat the SEC network game. Crushed the Big 10 cable game. All from lowly ESPN2.

LOL at the bolded. I bet that Texas Tech fan (JML2010, RaiderJeff, or all the other names he has gone by) is having a heart attack about right now.

JML: (covers ears) No, can't be! Coog High. Pine Box Tech. Commuter schools.... durrrrr......

So --- if Texas has no plans on giving up it's LHN I can see Texas pushing for Houston. Otherwise, if a Big 12 Network is a remote hope for the rest of the conference, expanding outside of Texas is almost a necessity. And let me add --- an area right in the Big 12 wheelhouse, Memphis, is also prime TV for football and recruiting. 04-bow

It also means that the current membership of the AAC would be making bookoos of TV money with the SEC's carriage fee since we are all in super high population states. In all likelihood though, we would never be able to negotiate anywhere close to the SEC's carriage fee haha

SEC = Religion. If P&G came up with SEC approved/endorsed soap, razors, pampers that stuff would sell.

Except UT can't get the LHN on Comcast in Houston. Adding UH to the conference might help UT (and ESPN) with that.

And if the Big 12 wanted to form a conference network w/out UT, they would absolutely need Houston if they wanted to command premium carriage fees in the Houston area. Without UT (and UH), they have no chance at premium fees in Houston.

Finally, Boren has already said that the Tier 1/2 TV deals will go up pro rata no matter who they add. So adding Houston certainly doesn't cost anyone in the Big 12 TV money.

RE: Houston area TV ratings
Have to think the league is happy with ratings this year. Cincy vs. Houston was viewed by 396K which is a bit up from the primetime Vandy vs. Houston game with 392K viewers the week before. Navy vs. Memphis had 653K viewers in the primetime time slot.

RE: Houston area TV ratings
Those ratings are only because Cincinnati is a national brand 03-nerner

In all seriousness though, those ratings aren't at all surprising. All cities have fickle, band-wagon fans that are going to watch and support a winner. The tough part will be keeping the interest during rebuilding years. If you guys happen to find the secret then fill us in!

Congrats on the year though and I hope it takes you guys somewhere better than the Big 12. Sucks that we are all fighting to get off the sinking boat only to land on the sinking life raft. We deserve better but money is evil.

RE: Houston area TV ratings
Houston hit a Grand Slam (on a 2nd tier channel)..so much for the talk, about people don't give a damn about UH in Houston, that was damnable lie, and narrative. Enough said! No Texas or other big name team just UH and Cincy.
