That said, this situation was much bigger than the racial aspect being highlighted. And all of the groups felt that Prez just patronized them and paid lip service with nothing of substance behind it. Unfortunately, racial division sells so that is what the lead is.
With all that said, all other things being equal, I would hire Pinkel in a heart beat. A coach that will teach these young men to follow your moral compass not the material aspects you may lose? What a refreshing lesson in collegiate athletics. Congrats Coach Pinkel on supporting your charges in the real world and being a true mentor that's worried about more than wins and losses.
And lest we forget, sports has very very often led social change in this country far more effectively than almost any other medium. From the Negro League baseballers to Cassius Clay (or Muhammad Ali) to Jim Brown to Texas Western to Lew Alcindor and Oscar Robertson to Arthur Ashe to Maria Navratilova to James Harris to Jesse Owens to Ray Rice to Northwestern football

Let them find money for a Greyhound out of town to a job.
Unfortunately most fans probably don't have that kind of backbone. I'm sure most Mizzu fans didn't agree with it, but at the same time were afraid to see their football team fall away into obscurity.
Backbone isn't being a wealthy fan and cancelling a donation that no one will notice. Backbone is taking a stand for something you believe in - no matter the politics of it - and jeopardizing your future. That's exactly what both Pinkel and his players did.
Over manufactured racism? Some drunk guys in a pickup reportedly dropping the n word?
At UC the racist comments sent to Irate8 were sent by a black guy.
I'm not going to get into a debate about so-called manufactured racism. My point was simply about what constitutes backbone and what doesn't. Pinkel and the players have all kinds of people shouting at them now - many making spurious claims about the origin of comments and others bringing real racism to the fore. They knew they would take heat for taking a stand, and that took backbone.
Pinkel took the easy way out. I am sure he didn't give a crap about this issue or whether Wolfe was there or not. He knew if he didn't side with the players, it could hurt recruiting. That is why he has no backbone.
The players also did not make any bold move. "oh how brave, you didn't have to practice for a day or two, what courage" All while they still enjoyed all of their other free benefits provided for free. Most of them probably had no idea what they were even protesting.

Should have told them "Miss the first practice and clear out your locker and room as all aid will end immediately except for a Greyhound or MegaBus ticket back to your momma."

Cal, such as?
Twenty months into his time as the leader of the university's flagship campus in Columbia, Loftin faced criticism for how he handled racism on campus, severed relations with Planned Parenthood, the loss of benefits for graduate students and the sudden resignation of the dean of the School of Medicine.
Last week the English Department made a vote of no confidence in Loftin's leadership. Today, nine deans signed a letter to the UM Board of Curators and to Wolfe saying Loftin had created a "toxic environment through threat, fear and intimidation," according to the Columbia Daily Tribune.
In a nutshell, the situation at U of Mo is bigger than and incorporates more than the latest reported racial components. In today's sound bite society, where the more divisive or controversial the headline/topic is the more air play it gets, messages get mixed very quickly. Bottom line, this particular univ president has apparently had problems relating to several different groups. I realize that the football team's involvement was primarily due to the perceived racism but the support from other groups was based on other grievances as well.

Quite simply this could be the most ignorant statement I've ever read on this board. This is the type of thing that highlights blatant stupidity and pushes normally reasonable people with differing viewpoints away from rational discussion.

I don't speak for SuperFly, but I am quite certain he was making a joke. People are fed up with PC crybabies like you.

Take you faux outrage and shove it. And if you can "prove" it worthy of being ignorant please do. Jeez it is a phucking joke going back to that movie The Program from 20 years ago.

If I were a college President I would never ok the hire of a coach that actively worked to undermine a sitting President and helped to force his resignation.
