I support their actions it's the Predidents job to react against numerous acts of racism on campus , his inability to communicate that it was unacceptable and meet with students sealed his fate.

College is about preparing young people for life. If Mizzou really cared about these athletes it would have revoked their scholarships immediately. That's the way it works in the real world.

Then, if you really have an actionable claim, you get an attorney. If not then grow up.

Revoking the scholarships would have destroyed the program.

You hit the nail on the head. This was becoming a lot bigger. My wife is a graduate of Mizzou and have a couple of friends on faculty. Faculty members were also threating to walk. That would mean that Mizzou would possibly lose a great deal of it's research funding (Big Bucks).

My question is: how does any university president 'combat racism'? Some idiot scrawls a swastika (and probably drew it backwards, because idiots) in a bathroom. Someone else drives by with a Confederate Flag on their truck. How can anyone stop random acts? Diversity councils, inclusion officers, and other buzzword nonsense won't stop a-holes from being a-holes.

If the president is lousy at his job, then fire him. But I don't understand how the above two examples (which i've seen referenced in many Mizzou stories) constitute some kind of institutional racism.

But he met with students. At meeting 1, they demanded he resign. He refused. It went downhill from there despite several more meetings with students.

Mizzou cut health Insurance subsidies for grad students back in August, yet spent 72 million on stadium improvements. Cuts to subsidies will get you protest.

He was a bad prez for many reasons. The least of which was "racial tension".

This is the vehicle they used to get him out, and everything I have read about what happened, and measures that were being brought to the table by the Administration to address it were what any other school would do.

It is a poor precedent being set in this situation.

They don't even know who did it. It was just in a dorm bathroom.

Anyone could have done it to enflame the situation more.

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/201.../75146968/

A University of Cincinnati student won't be prosecuted for racially charged comments directed at the campus activist group The Irate8, according to Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters' office.

No criminal charges will be filed against the African-American male found to have made the posts, including one which read: "I don't know if I have enough rope for all of the irate8."

The unidentified student admitted to posting the comments and said they were intended as a joke, according to Deters' office.

The Irate 8, is a student group at UC named for the percentage of black students on campus.

In commenting on the case, Deters said "there is no law against making stupid and insensitive comments."

"While the posts are in incredibly poor taste and racially insensitive, they do not rise to the level of a criminal offense," Deters said in the release. "We reviewed many criminal statues, including Inducing Panic Ohio Revised Code Section 2917.31, but nothing fits these crude comments

What happened at Mizzou will just encourage more manufactured faux "racism".

Cornell is right. All of those things occurred and it was just building. Don't know about elsewhere, but the news outlets here on the Mississippi Coast and in NOLA were reporting those things as part of the reason for the resignation.

No. No. It is much better watching people overreact then to actually watch them take the time to learn the facts. Yes reasonable people would try to learn the issues before forming an opinion, but to Hell with that. We live in a World where people neither want nor need facts to form their opinions.

If anything I think it is more about how difficult it is to be a college president in this environment. Should he have done more or realized how sensitive his clientele was in this area, yes, but drunken idiots using the N word and a swastika, every president in the SEC would have lost their jobs years ago. There are 35k students, of course there will be idiots.

You need to reevaluate your political leanings my friend.

In my 20s I identified as liberal or progressive, but I gotta tell you as you grow older you start to get a better picture of what goes on in society.

What happened at Missouri is just the beginning.

RE: Mizzou president is out ...
situations like this at Mizzou and at Ole Miss in the past seem so foreign to me

someone can correct me otherwise but I've never witnessed or heard about any racial tension at UCF. Our campus feels moderate politically and a positive inclusive environment. This type of tension seems normal on SEC campuses
