Exclamation Week 10 G5 Spotlight:"whoops" week
The G5 has its hero's....its schools that are the ones G5 conference fans are expecting and counting on to show to the world they are relevant in the college football world.

For the hero's, schools in contention for that coveted autobid largely it was a "whoops" week where games were dropped among the contenders and Houston had a close call itself against Cincinnati.

Navy 45 Memphis 20
Arkansas State 40 Appalachian State 27
Northern Illinois 32 Toledo 27
Middle Tennessee 27 Marshall 24

Memphis, Appalachian State, Toledo and Marshall are now on life support in the G5 race. They have 2 or less losses yet but none of these schools are leading their conference anymore.

There is one hero however that was brought back to life. Boise State didn't play this week but was able to disengage the life support machine after Utah State dropped its 2nd MWC game. Suddenly Boise is right back in the autobid picture albeit with only a pulse.

Chances Alive: Houston, Navy, Temple
Chances w/ Pulse: Bowling Green, Boise State, Western Kentucky
Chances on Life Support: Memphis, Toledo, Marshall, App State
Dead: Anyone else.

Memphis absolute is more than on life support. If they win out, the ONLY thing that Memphis would need to win the AAC is a Houston win over Navy- in Houston. They absolutely have more of a pulse than Bowling Green, Boise St, or Western Kentucky.

Not sure Navy over Memphis would be considered a whoops. Navy is 7-1.

Memphis is still in the thick of things IF Houston can beat Navy and they beat Houston. Houston is obviously in the driver's seat and can afford to lose one of the last 3 games as long as they win AAC west.

Here's some odd info for you. If USF wins last 3 games (has Temple and Cincy at home) and Memphis defeats Temple, USF will be in the AAC championship game.

Only game that Houston can lose without worry is UConn. Lose to Memphis, they would need Memphis to lose to Temple to then control their own fate. Lose to Navy, and Navy has wins over both Memphis and Houston. Pretty much, Houston can't lose and win the AAC west just about now. It's all or nothing for Houston.

It's good to still be alive in the conference race this late in the season, and to be one win from bowl eligibility. Baby steps. 04-cheers

RE: Week 10 G5 Spotlight:"whoops" week
Jeff Sagarin G5 Top 10 for 11/8

24 Houston
26 Boise State
29 Navy
38 Memphis
39 Temple
44 Bowling Green
48 Toledo
54 Western Kentucky
56 Cincinnati
58 Louisiana Tech

-The AAC has 5 of the Top 10 schools this week in Sagarins with the #1, #3, #4, #5 teams respectively. Almost a clean sweep at the top.

-Boise State is back in business with Utah State's collapse and is near the top of the Sagarins.

-The SBC has nobody in the Top 10 this week. App State is technically still in the autobid hunt with 2 losses but they need A-State to drop 2 with 3 to play so the window will only be open another week or so.

Nope on Toledo. They need AAC champ to have 2 losses. That's getting close to impossible now.

Sagarin Top 5 schedules of autobid contenders:

Memphis (73)
Navy (77)
Boise State (87)
Bowling Green (92)
Temple (99)

-AAC also dominates the schedules of the G5 proving its overall higher conference strength. Memphis and Navy are on top. Houston while not represented yet has yet to play Memphis and Navy so once they do expect to see the SOS go up.

-Boise State is ahead of Bowling Green in SOS and Sagarin Rating at the moment. However with WMU and Toledo coming up BG will improve its numbers over the next couple weeks. If they don't, that means they will have lost and they are out of consideration.

Toledo is in 3rd place in the MAC West.

They need WMU and NIU to both lose 1 time to get off of life support. This is possible as BG is playing WMU next and the week after WMU/NIU play.

If WMU wins the next 2 weeks they lock up the MAC West and Toledo would be out of the division race with a loss while BG would be out of the conversation picking up a 3rd loss to WMU.

What the AAC does or doesn't do isn't as important to BG/Toledo as the MAC race at the moment.

Um, you are wrong. If WMU wins the next 2 weeks(vs Bowling Green and Northern Illinois), and Toledo wins the next 2 weeks(vs Central Michigan and Bowling Green)- WMU would be 7-0, Toledo 6-1, and Northern Illinois and Central Michigan would have both at least 2 losses. The WMU/Toledo game would be for the division title.

Pretty good showing by the "3rd place team" Navy. Of course they weren't a serious access bowl contender LOL

That's right WMU win over NIU would negate NIU's win over Toledo.

I guess its possible for Houston and Temple to pick up losses the last week of the season before heading into the championship game to make it a 11-1 Houston vs. 10-2 Temple matchup. A 10-3 Temple team if they drop that game against Memphis.

Temple wins at 11-3 the AAC and Toledo wins the MAC at 12-1.

If Houston loses last game of season, they are out. Either Navy or Memphis would be the rep at that point, depending on what happens next 2 weeks....

I don't know why, but the P5 schools treat Army, Navy and Air Force as P5 schools. Could be that they are blue blood tradition teams. With Navy 1 lost? They might be more attractive choice for a major bowl game to replace when a P5 conference could not fill their spots.

As it is, I see the AAC and the MWC are power conferences with the other 5, but spends less money.

RE: Week 10 G5 Spotlight:"whoops" week
Contenders Check in for 11/8 (AP for Rankings):

American Athletic
Houston 9-0 (W 34-31 Louisville, W 34-0 Vanderbilt, 11/14 #25 Memphis)
Temple 8-1 (W 27-10 Penn State, L 24-20 #9 Notre Dame, 11/21 #25 Memphis)
Navy 7-1 (L 41-24 #15 Notre Dame, W 45-20 #15 Memphis, 11/27 #16 Houston)
Memphis 8-1 (W 55-23 Kansas, W 37-34 #13 Mississippi, 11/14 #16 Houston, 11/21 #21 Temple)

Mid American
Bowling Green 7-2 (W 48-27 Maryland, W 35-28 Purdue, L 59-30 #25 Tennessee)
Toledo 7-1 (W 16-12 #18 Arkansas, W 30-23 Iowa State)

Mountain West
Boise State 7-2 (W 16-13 Washington, W 56-10 Virginia)

Conference USA
Western Kentucky 8-2 (W 14-12 Vanderbilt, L #5 48-20 Louisiana State)
Marshall 8-2 (W 41-31 Purdue)

Sun Belt
Appalachian State 7-2 (L 42-10 #12 Clemson)

The Top 5 contenders at this point for the autobid.

1) Houston 9-0 (W 34-31 Louisville, W 34-0 Vanderbilt, 11/14 #25 Memphis)
2) Temple 8-1 (W 27-10 Penn State, L 24-20 #9 Notre Dame, 11/21 #25 Memphis)
3) Navy 7-1 (L 41-24 #15 Notre Dame, W 45-20 #15 Memphis, 11/27 #16 Houston)
4) Bowling Green 7-2 (W 48-27 Maryland, W 35-28 Purdue, L 59-30 #25 Tennessee)
5) Boise State 7-2 (W 16-13 Washington, W 56-10 Virginia)

-Houston moves into first place as the only undefeated team left in the field and with 2 P5 wins has put together a decent resume for itself.

-Temple is in charge of its division. It has 1 loss, a very high quality one to ND.

-Navy had a surprise win this week against Memphis that puts them squarely in the race for the autobid. Despite the win they remain behind Houston in the divisional pecking order and they didn't perform as well against ND as Temple did.

-Bowling Green has 2 losses but they are both good losses to a ranked Tennessee team and Memphis. That is better than Boise State's losses to Utah State and BYU. That keeps BG at the forefront of the 2 loss team conversation.

-Toledo/Memphis both need some help in the conference race to get back into the conversation. Both have 2 P5 wins to their credit and would be viable autobid candidates.

What I think is interesting here is the implications for Army if Navy's AAC gamble pays off in its first year with a NY6 bowl bid.

That will make the Navy administration look like geniuses and perhaps convince Army to consider joining the conference.

Memphis would go to the AAC championship in a 3-way tie with Houston & Navy? Houston beats Navy, Navy has 1 conf loss. Navy beat Memphis giving them 1 conf loss. Then Memphis beats Houston giving them 1 conf loss.

Ahhh, but I see Memphis plays Temple. In many conferences, it's the record of the opposing teams in the other division. So by MAC rules, Memphis would go.

Much the same in the MAC if NIU/WMU/CMU tied for 1st place in the West in the same way w/ 1 loss to each other, WMU would go because they would have beat Bowling Green and NIU+CMU never played BG.

However, both WMU and Toledo beating Bowling Green won't happen. BGSU is the best team in the MAC -- they have the best QB in all of G5. A poor D, and against WMU it's going to be like the Memphis game they played -- whoever scores last wins.

Chances don't look to good for Memphis if they were torched by 25 at home vs. Navy.
