ESPN is showing us giving up 321 ypg and 18.5 ppg, while GS is at 342 ypg and 22.8 ppg.

Georgia Southern and App are tied vs conference teams in scoring defense. Georgia Southern actually leads in total defense based on yards/game in conference.

The joke was that Troy was making a big deal about having the "top" defense in scoring defense when only looking at games played in conference.

Which was more of a product of having not played the two best offenses in the conference to that point.

Also, I love that everyone continues to ignore the Arkansas State defense, which leads the nation in interceptions (21) turnovers forced (27) and is 2nd in defensive touchdowns (6)

We give up a few more points than the App's of the world, but average 47 points per game in league play, so they don't have to be perfect all the time.

Ark St has a bend but don't break defense, which is fine, because of what you said, your offense scores so many points all your defense needs to do, is hold teams under 30.

Because about 26 of those turnovers came in a 5 minute span in the 4th quarter of the USA game. 03-banghead

It's not really bend but don't break. Basically the idea is, force a turnover or a 3 and out, or give up points on a big play quickly so the offense can get the ball back to tire the opposing defense out.

We'll give up the big plays because we know we can force turnovers and eventually tire teams out.

I think we played the best game we played all year. Seriously. It also helped getting our only receiver and our best defensive player back.

Even the self-appointed GS-homer police man Eagle's Cliff thinks we played a good game.

That is technically above average for the FBS....doesn't seem right though. So our achilles heal seems to be a little less weak than yours.

We're 62rd in rush yards per play. We're 93rd in total rush yards given up. Teams have not passed nearly as much on Troy's defense as they have tried to run. Being only 0.01 behind GS in the conference rush defense is quite a feat since so many teams have tried to run on us. CSU ran 60 times on Troy, Wisconsin, NCSTATE, and Miss State relied heavily on their run game. We'll give up more vs GS than any, but we'll have at least some success stopping it I think.

We're 38th in rush yards per play if you hit the vs conference teams only button. I don't know if that's a meaningful stat or not, but it's worth looking at.

You're 86th in yards per attempt vs the pass.

If App got 248 I dont see us getting less. Their run game is solid but not near ours. We will see, Troy certainly has gotten better since the beginning of the year. Our DB's have not made a lot of outstanding plays but they do not let bad decisions or bad throws go unpunished much. As much as y'all throw I would be shocked not to get at least two picks. Fritz is good with half time adjustments usually so the beginning of the third quarter will likely be the most telling if things do not go well in the first half.

Welp...

Troy will be better. I am thinking a two year climb.

It's not awkward at all. Troy fans were excited for the first time in five years, we had the highest rated defense in the conference. You guys perceived it as chest beating. It was never about you. That's the awkward part.

We're on the right path and we've felt like we've made good hires. We lead the conference in Scoring Defense, Sacks, Tackles For Loss, and 3rd Down Conversion Defense. That's a big deal for Troy fans. We still lead some of those categories, despite having played two of the three best offenses in the SBC. We're still 3rd in the SBC on scoring defense after being bottom feeders for five years.

Any positive praising of your own team will be perceived as chest beating. That's just how this board is.

Exactly this. One of the ESPN3 commentators had it right as an "attack style" defense. This is pure conjecture on my part, but it seems to me we're as focused on creating the best possible situation for our offense, more often than not, as we are stopping the opponent's offense. We might give up yards and points on occasion, but we gain great field position via turnovers, lost yardage, blocked kicks, and forcing mistakes not to mention putting points on the board when the offense is off the field.

It's a different style, for sure, but it's clearly effective. Just not something you see in most traditional defensive stats.
