"Two quarterbacks from the same team own the top two single-game passing-yard totals in the country.
Cincinnati's Gunner Kiel threw for a career-high 523 yards and four touchdowns in his team's 33-30 loss to nationally ranked Houston on Saturday. The Bearcats' unhappy result largely was due to two interceptions Kiel threw and his inability to hit receivers on four straight passes on the game's final drive.
Freshman Hayden Moore still holds the nation's season high for passing yards, with a Cincinnati-record 557 in a 53-46 loss to Memphis on Sept. 24. Moore was pressed into duty late in the first quarter of that game when Kiel went out with a neck injury."
That's pretty simplistic if you ask me. We had so many mistakes on Saturday. In a three point game if we would have not botched any one of our mistakes things would have turned out differently. I could easily argue that if Tion Greene had not fumbled in the end zone we would have won. If not for the dropped passes by our WR's (Mr. Mckay I am looking at you) we would have won. If not for Sam Geraci's punt being blocked we would have won. I could go on and on...

The laundry list of errors in this game was the difference. The roughing penalty on 3rd down, couple dropped balls that could've been INTs, missed false start call followed by bad face mask call plus all the things already mentioned. Too many mistakes to pin it on Kiel but clearly had he stepped up and delivered in the clutch (and not had the pick 6) we would've won the game. I'm still perplexed we threw deep on 4 straight plays instead of trying to keep the chains moving. But that's generally the way we play the rest of the game so it's no surprise. 3rd and 5 for us requires Kiel to throw a precision pass generally 30+ yards downfield.

^^ Oh I agree.
I made that same comment earlier in this thread. At the time Houston was only rushing three and dropped eight back into coverage. At that point we should have done what we often do-- throw those short routes to Shaq and Max to move the chains.

About that last drive. I need to go back and watch the replay but does anybody think any plays were called or did the coaches just leave it up to Kiel?
Wouldn't it have been possible to down the ball once so they could take a breath and think about what they were trying to accomplish and maybe call a couple of plays?
The middle looked like it was open on at least one of those pass plays.
That was a very disappointing set of downs for a veteran QB. If ever there was a time for him to take off and run once that would have been the time to do it. He could have rolled out instead of staying in the pocket. He had a chance to show that he was in command of the offense and he failed.
UC throws sideline passes most of the game and then they don't throw any on that series?
I don't get it either.

RE: Houston Game Thread
I am frustrated,, but hopeful... I never did buy that this was going to be our break out year... The defense was just not ready for prime time.. But,,,, the defense is really improving...
We are the best and worst in college football... The offense was ranked number 5 before the Houston game (will probably move up)..
We have played (3) ranked teams (that is (3) more than Ohio State)..
All those games were within three points... I think,, we are close...
Need to stop the penalties and turn overs... Also,,, we got (2) very
bad calls in the Memphis and Houston games that probably changed the outcome of the game....
This the first time, in our (3) year coaching cycle, that we are knocking on the door, instead of starting over..... I feel good about
our direction....

That's about how I feel right now. It sucks it is happening while I'm a student, but good things seem to be coming.

The main reason I feel good about next year is the schedule. Seven home games, the best teams on the schedule come to Nippert (Memphis, Houston, BYU, USF, and ECU), the road games include teams that are rebuilding or just not very good (UCF, UConn, Temple, Purdue, and Tulsa).
The schedule last year helped UC win the league because the best conference teams were at home. Yes, UC lost to Memphis but getting ECU and Houston at home were huge. Last seasons road game at SMU, Tulane, Temple, and UConn were much easier than the current slate. The non-conference schedule was the issue that held down UC earlier in the year. The double bye didn't help and road games at Ohio State and Miami Fl we going to be difficult no matter what.
2017 and 2018 conference's schedule are even easier when Memphis, Houston, and Tulsa are replaced with Navy, Tulane, and SMU.

With that schedule we go 13-0 and still won't sniff the playoffs, just like Houston this year. Better do some beefing up.

The playoff are always going to be a long shot but 2016 sets up to be a year where UC could go realistically go 6-1 at home and 4-1 on the road and find themselves playing for a New Years Bowl in the conference championship game.
2017 has a game at Michigan and 2018 has at UCLA.

They will never allow a non-power school into a 4 team playoff. Never ever ever.
