Different perspective from the Stands
I meant to write this earlier but had to travel and just got back today. I attended the game this past week and have to be honest it was my first time attending a game this season. I was told to take care of my health. 03-banghead Sorry for a new thread but do not have the time to go through all thread to see where it fit.
Seeing the game in person allowed me to observe things that you don't notice on TV. Here's some of my observations from attending in person. Attendance looked to be equal. La Tech traveled well and they were making much more noise than we were. On our side DB was booed at the end of the first half when we decided to run Dillard up the middle with 59 seconds left. The folks around us where not very happy. We had 3 timeouts left. If only the camera would have gotten a shot of the folks two rows in front of us. They were letting Bailiff have it. Others like us were in shock. DJ made some good runs according to the commentators however he missed wide open receivers in the end zone. He had Alaka and German opened on several occasions and he put his head down and ran. People were yelling throw it. Bailiff is not involved in the huddles. Is always an assistant which made me think, what's his role? Does he listen and gets involved as necessary or what? On several occasions he ran to one of the assistants and it appeared to be asking questions. He seemed lost. The penalties by the defense were dumb however from our perspective it appeared that it was retaliation because the La Tech kids were talking plenty and pushing us around. Not justifying but I can only imagine the kids heard plenty of lip service last year when they embarrassed us and where once again getting pushed around. Bailiff got on the kid then went looking for him again, we said that's it for him. Yet he was back on the field perhaps we did not have anyone else. Great drive on the first TD, we opened up a bit then it disappeared. Wright/German had two catches each yet they appeared opened on many occasions. We kept asking ourselves what game is our OC watching. We were down 35-7 and we had a couple of players dancing on the sidelines. I was not sure what to make of it, they're no longer engaged or perhaps they said if we can't beat them, let's join them and have fun. Stehling was warming up but never came in. I don't understand why we don't give any of our backup QB's a chance to play. The game was over at 35-7, our coach told us that when he ran the clock out at halftime. The MOB was entertaining and Chick-Fil-A was good as always. We left after Rice went back to back three and out. We had fun but what a great disappointment. When we left, La Tech had more fans than the Rice side. Something has to change if not this is only going to get worst. We must have had 100 students at the game, majority of the kids we saw were high school kids.

RE: Different perspective from the Stands
Good frank post. A thoughtful post that got me to thinking. I hope I don't sound like a parrot here but...

It hits me that what we require is a game changer. Incremental change is not going to get it done. A little progress, and then slip back again is that path, a veritable Sisyphus solution.

I think what is required is an exponential change, which ultimately means a super well heeled donor is going to have step up. Like the Patterson end zone facility, except with another zero added on the end of the donation.

Otherwise, we can have our nice program doing things for the right reasons.

The trait of DJs -- that he always puts his eyes down the *second* he starts scrambling -- seems to be an eminently fixable problem. And yet it hasn't been fixed for years.

That's not entirely accurate, he's actually kept plays alive and made passes after scrambling, in some cases it's resulted in big plays, other times in bad decisions. There aren't many Aaron Rodgers out there. NFL QB's like Kapernick and others have similar issues they haven't been able to fix. DJ's issues are what they are. Nobody thinks he's an NFL QB, but for college football he's easily above-average, and for Rice he's basically an all time great at the QB position (top 5?). We continuously complain about him and other things like we're Ohio St. You know how many teams around the country wish they had him as their QB? For his career, he's thrown 43 TD passes to only 13 interceptions. For the most part, with the game on the line, he's made plays. The reason we won at FAU and vs Army was DJ and his late TD drives. The main reason we won bowl games comfortably vs Air Force and Fresno was DJ's play. I could go on and on about good things he's done.

On a related note, interesting article from the El Paso Times. http://www.elpasotimes.com/story/sports/.../75156722/
"Rice Thriving in a Rebuilding Year." Go ahead and laugh Parliament. Unfortunately, few share my views, which are more aligned with this writer, the players, ex-players, fellow coaches, and the national perception that Rice is improving, than what we read here, where it sounds like the program is a total disaster.

Thanks for the link to the article. Perspective is always a good thing. Without delving into the pros-cons of DB as coach, I will say this: The general consensus from people outside the program and across the conference is that Rice is now seen as one of the big fish in CUSA. We are the team that a lot of other schools want to beat. Knowing fans of UNT and UTSA, I can tell you that they circle the Rice game on their calendar, and that is one of the games they absolutely, positively want to win. Like it or not, other schools see Rice as the program they want to measure themselves against.

I think that it has been reasonably argued that a coach speaking about their upcoming game is going to be upbeat... and 'total disaster' is hyperbole at best imo... so I don't really see that comments like this do anything but perpetuate the argument and try and insult dissenting opinions.

The best measure of a program isn't comments on a message board or certainly not in newspapers.... The best measure is butts in the seats and coaches being offered 'better' deals.

We tried to 'sweeten the deal' for our first year football coach with a 7-5 record in 2005 to keep him from leaving and as I understand it, we had to do the same for our first year basketball coach with a .375 winning percentage and we've certainly sweetened David's deal since we hired him. None of us REALLY know if DB or his assistants are getting offers/overtures now... but THAT would be the greatest indicator of how they are REALLY viewed. As for the fans, let's see what the turnout is in El Paso or at home against Charlotte.

I think most of us would agree, but the complaint isn't that we're not a big fish in CUSA, but that CUSA is a small pond.... even by g5 standards. By every measure I see, we're the 7th best team out of 14 in CUSA this year, and it is a relatively down year for us which isn't 'horrible'... but also by every measure, CUSA is the 10th or 11th best conference.

Absolutely perspectives matter, but I don't think it is helpful to continually argue about them.... because they are ALL correct, if you look at things just right. Half empty or half full is a matter of perspective... but either way it's 4 ounces of water.

Thank you! How is sitting at around 90-100 out of 128 teams considered a success story? Only because the outside perspective expects very little out of Rice and, so far, we're just meeting expectations.

This small-program thinking is why Bailiff will be back next year, regardless of record, 4-8 vs. 8-4. Get ready for year ten. Sigh.

The biggest issue is that the number of "people outside the program" that care and know can figuratively be counted on one hand. I am sure there are several DIII programs that have handfuls of people who consider other schools rivals; to everyone else, they don't matter.

RE: Different perspective from the Stands
I guess when I read stuff like in this thread, the things I most think about are:

'Is it entertaining?'

and the 2 corollaries:

'Is it worth spending my money on?' and

'Do casual, non-connected fans consider our current Rice football product worth spending their discretionary sports dollars (and time) on?' (with the related one of

'Will this current Rice football product pull back in or pull in for the first time any Rice-connected people who currently don't watch, follow or support it?'

(All quotes are mine).

That's one funny article. I have to give David Bailiff credit, he sure knows marketing. He would make a great campaign manager. I get a kick out at how good he is at putting a spin to things. The script is perfect,----"we have gone to three bowls and planning on going to a fourth after we beat these dead beat programs" - My questions would be a bit different. For example "how many top 50 teams and how many teams with a winning record did you beat during this awesome accomplishment. DB -"we have nine players in the NFL" my response "how many of them were All Americans meaning you fully maximized their potential while at Rice". DB-"we graduate our players" me- "Rice has one of the highest overall student graduation stat in the nation which means the University graduates the students, not the coaches" "how many kids can tell their parents I want to transfer and give up fifty thousand dollars in education?"
My questions would be why did you run the clock out with three timeouts left and 50 seconds yet you have a fifth year QB on your team? "how come La Tech continues to pound your team, last year your team was very experienced yet got hammered?" "You mentioned your team is very young yet you don't play them unless you have to, for example you have not played any of your backup QB's even when your starter has not been very effective" "why is your team outscored in the first and third quarter by such huge numbers, do you attribute this to the players not being ready to play and not making the proper adjustments?" "Do you consider games like Notre Dame, Baylor as glorified practices?" Final question "coach there are approximately ten job openings out there, with your record how many schools have called you, can we expect to see you at Virginia Tech, Miami or South Carolina?"
How come no one is asking him those questions.

I hope he is back and see the empty stadium. I have more confidence in Dr. K. . He will not stand by and be had. Something will change even if we go 7-5.

"how come La Tech continues to pound your team, last year your team was very experienced yet got hammered?" "You mentioned your team is very young yet you don't play them unless you have to, for example you have not played any of your backup QB's even when your starter has not been very effective" "Why is your team outscored in the first and third quarter by such huge numbers, do you attribute this to the players not being ready to play and not making the proper adjustments?" "Do you consider games like Notre Dame, Baylor as glorified practices?" Final question "Coach, there are approximately ten job openings out there, with your record how many schools have called you, can we expect to see you at Virginia Tech, Miami or South Carolina?"

How come no one is asking him those questions?

Some very good questions, Saints. I think because right now in the fall is softball season. Hardball starts in Feb/early spring when Wayne's World comes back, and the hard wood begins this weekend with an exhibition game. Perhaps he makes sure most interviewers understand and agree exactly what season it is before he consents to the interview.

DB-"we graduate our players" me- "Rice has one of the highest overall student graduation stat in the nation which means the University graduates the students, not the coaches" "how many kids can tell their parents I want to transfer and give up fifty thousand dollars in education?"

we need to send those questions to the Owl Insider guy and the young lady at the Chronicle that covers Rice. You imagine Bailiff getting those questions. He would change the subject and talk about the construction of the new facilities. Can you ask him what's up with the Co-offensive coordinators titles, the only guy I read about is Edmondson so no need to have two Co-offensive coordinators unless it was a way to give one guy more money. Also ask when is the offense going to go faster or can we expect to see a new offensive coordinator.

I thought it was a no-brainer that C-USA was easily ahead of the Sun Belt, as my system has indicated all season. However, approximately one-third of the rating systems in Massey list our conference as dead last. Yikes!

When I served in the embassy in Kazahstan in the mid 90s, the shrinkage of the Aral Sea (and it was at that time bigger than shown in the current picture still) had caused enormous environmental problems. Although I have not kept up with it, I am sure it has not gotten better.

Let's hope that the "Aral Sea of collegiate football conferences" does not do metaphorically environmental damage to its conference members.

Earlier this year, National Geographic published a sad recounting of the decline of the Aral Sea: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2015/0...nnott-text

I'm still irritated with Leebron for dismissing UH and SMU's move to AAC, I still feel he carries as much blame as Greenspan. There was no vision on his part and now were stuck in CUSA and half the fans are happy because we can end up 7-5 every year.
