G5 should separate and form its own playoff
I've been sitting here watching the Toldeo/NIU game(because I love college football and will watch any game) and it occurs to me that games like this deserve to mean more than they do.

I'm one who believes that the G5 should be its own division and have its own playoff. I know some would probably think that would hurt those leagues, but right now they're just playing for 2nd rate bowls come the postseason.

I think most of America would be far more fascinated with an 12 or 16 team playoff of G5 schools. The top programs could distinguish themselves and possibly move up into the P5. Meanwhile, everyone else has something legitimate to play for.

There's a reason the P5 has autonomy now...the money gap is just too big for the vast majority of G5 schools to compete.

That being the case, the G5 has more to gain by forming its own division and selling off it's own playoff. Some would say that will cost the G5 leagues money as they technically wouldn't be eligible for the CFP. Or more directly that such a move would deny access to a G5 school possibly getting into the CFP.

Let's be realistic here for a moment. A G5 school will never be selected to be in the playoff. It doesn't matter if some people think it should be an option. It will never happen. It's good for a G5 school to get access to a NYD 6 game, but that's one game that ultimately doesn't mean a lot.

G5 schools get the most exposure when they play P5 opponents during the regular season. They get the most benefit when they win those games. There's coming a time when P5 schools will play almost exclusively P5 schools so the G5 leagues are going to get left out of the real money one way or the other.

Of course, G5 schools will probably always get a chance to schedule P5 schools on a yearly basis, it just won't happen as often. As P5 conferences expand, increase the number of conference games, and seek to consolidate most of the money at the top then the only ones to suffer will be the G5s.

If G5 leagues, however, separate and then move to smaller, more regional leagues then a national playoff at the end of the season could garner a lot of attention. The teams will be playing for something that matters. The networks will still be interested in G5 games for regular season content and for match-ups against P5s. In addition, however, the G5s will increase the value of their games against each other by having their own exclusive playoff at the end of the year.

Think about the percentage of revenue the mid-majors get from March Madness as opposed to the bigger leagues. It's pretty much equal. The G5s get little to nothing from the CFP though because they bring nothing to the table that the P5 need. The G5, however, could keep everything from its own playoff.

They would probably be joined in fact by some of the top FCS schools to expand the footprint of fans. They could also save money by setting some of their own rules on stipends and scholarship limits...that way you wouldn't have to worry about breaking the bank to keep up with the P5s.

The G5 divisional winners are playing for the Fiesta, Cotton or Peach bowl.

10-15 G5 schools from 5 G5 conferences competing seriously for the Fiesta, Cotton or Peach bowl.

How many schools between the PAC and B1G seriously compete for the Rose in a given season? 6 schools out of 26? The ratio is better but not by much.

Memphis is #13 in the first CFP poll. Only 9 spots away from the playoff.

The P5 will never let the G5 split off, here's why-

The SEC has 112 games scheduled for the regular season, 56 OOC games and 56 conference games. Of the 56 OOC games the SEC plays this year only 11 are vs other P5 teams, and half of those are old rivalry games (Fla v FSU, etc). That means out of 112 schedule games this fall the SEC plays 45 games vs non P5 opponents. That's 40% of SEC games played, and nearly all of them are scheduled as home games. And the other P5 conferences schedule similarly.

If the G5 left FBS not much would change for the G5 schools, but it would be devastating for the P5. Replace 45 OOC games with P5 opponents and how many more losses would that be for the conference this year? Other P5 teams won't take buy-out games, they'll demand 1x1s, what will the economic impact be of losing all of those extra home games? What happens to your fan bases when championship dreams start getting crushed in September instead of Oct or Nov?

FBS is the most rigged, corrupt sports league this side of FIFA. If you truly feel bad for teams like NIU and Toledo and you want to help them out then support these 3 simple changes to FBS-

1. Direct path to a championship- FBS is the only sports league on the planet that doesn't have a direct path to a championship game for its members. A corrupt group of good old boys picking the 4 teams that will draw the best TV ratings is awful for sports. The student athletes deserve better.

2. Equitable Revenue Sharing- I'm talking league level only- CFP money. Not conference level or school level. The reason we have the labels "P5" and "G5" is so we can justify giving 5 conferences an 80% share of the revenue while giving the other 5 conferences just 20%. The NFL shares its league TV contract equally, Dallas gets the same amount as Jacksonville, so why not do it for educational institutions. Over the 12 year lifespan of the CFP contract the P5 is on track to earn over $1billion MORE than the G5, just from the CFP deal alone, and the P5 has the gall to claim the G5 is holding them back because they cant keep up financially.

3. Coach Salary Caps- because of the gross inequity in rev distribution (see #2) the worst P5 team can come along and offer double, triple or more to a good coach at a G5 school. Stop using half the league for a farm system for the coaches in the other half.

How does a Go5 playoff make that game mean more?

As it stands, it meant that Toledo was playing to hold onto their outside shot at the Fiesta, Cotton or Peach bowl.

From inside the MAC and outside of the two schools playing, and looking at the profile of the current FCS Championship, even having both teams playing for a shot at getting into a moderately upgraded FCS championship game does not match one of the teams playing to hold onto an outside shot at an actual Big Bowl Game.

As others have already pointed out, if that was a compelling value proposition, all that the teams have to do to pursue it is to downgrade to FCS ... Voila, shot at a "one step down from Bowl Subdivision" Playoff!

Its a good plan that will never happen. Theres a lot of truth in the fact that the g5 will NEVER get into the cfp.
the need for a new division is to keep from being stuck with those who cant compete in the fcs. Lets face it the top fcs is just as good as g5 teams and better than many but the middle of the road fcs hasnt the commitment or desire to compete in football. The g5 will never step away unless it were financially beneficial so the only way this would be conceivably possible is if it were back financially by a media giant thats willing to pay.

The biggest problem for the G5 isn't the access its the money split.

They should rank the conferences on performance 1-10 and split the money that way instead of giving big guarantees to P5 conferences regardless on how well they do on the season.

#2 Conference: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (9/56 shares)
#3 Conference: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (8/56 shares)
#4 Conference: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (7/56 shares)
#5 Conference: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (6/56 shares)
#6 Conference: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (5/56 shares)

The AAC should get at least 1/2 of the payout as the top performing conference this year. If that payout to the top performing conference is 100 million the AAC should be making $50 million, not $25 million as they do in the current system.

That is correct. If those that want a separate G5 type of playoff, they just need to move down the FCS. The FCS championship provides conference auto-bids and at-larges and there should be a few G5 schools that really do need to move down.
Only on that, but being FCS still keeps your other sports in Division 1.

FCS is gaining some more exposure in the past 6 years. Part maybe NDSU and part is that when given a chance, people do like to watch good teams play (ie. Montana vs NDSU).
By the way, the Montana-NDSU game had decent rating and just a much as a bowl game.
