RE: 3/4 SEASON UPDATE - OWLS FOOTBALL
Ok, let's examine the situation. We currently have three possibilities:

1. he will be retained. That is up to JK
2. he will be fired. That also is up to JK, and I believe both one and two are on his plate right now.
3. he will get hired away. I know many of you think nobody would want him, but this country is full of divorced people who are amazed that somebody else wants their *&#$^*!!! ex.

If either 2 or 3 happens, is there anybody on the staff that you would want in consideration for the HC job?

No.

When DB leaves, we will want new blood. And we will want to try and find someone who can bring some energy to the program. My worry would be going with a relative unknown, someone who isn't attached to a program that we view as something we would like to emulate. So far JK has done that in basketball (VCU and Maryland), and I believe he would do it again for football.

I really think that JK could pull the trigger at the end of the year if we have no momentum going into the offseason. We need to create some, and the only way keeping DB around does, is if there is if we end the year on an unforeseen high note or we bring in a lot of new blood (either at HC or with a number of new assistants),

It makes it easier for him to move, but 1) I don't want anybody working of me who doesn't want be here, and 2) if he gets hired away, that means the program is more attractive to candidates, and therefore should attract a better field, than at any time since maybe Jess retired.

Extending Bailiff's contract also tells fans he will be here for the duration of their careers, which is not a good message at all. It could literally kill the program. Recruits come to Rice for other reasons (certainly not for the exciting coaching product), and Rice can offer the next coach 800k reasons why they should want the job. D1 jobs are still quite rare, and Rice is easily one of the most attractive jobs in the G5.

So what if Bailiff's feelings are hurt? He's been well compensated by Rice for 9 years of incompetence.

The next great coach of Rice football is likely a person unknown to the average fan. It's JK's job to identify this talent, similar to how Mike Rhoades has been brought on board.

Agree on the momentum issue - the conference title is getting further and further away each day. I would be pretty surprised if Bailiff is let go after this year, but I think a loss to Southern Miss (meaning we will finish, at best, third in the division this year) would hopefully mean Bailiff is coaching for his job next year. In this day and age of college football athletics, we can't afford to have the same mediocre standards for football coaches that we had in the 70s and 80s, and we can't wait around hoping that this team is going to win a conference championship (or even play in the damn game) every four or five years.

If we lose to Southern Miss at home, that will be the third home loss (and third home conference loss). Definitely not a sign of progress.

RE: 3/4 SEASON UPDATE - OWLS FOOTBALL
Back to the thread title- I'd say at that as we round the turn for the final lap that we are a frustrating 4-4. I think 4-4 is what many projected so in that sense we are pretty much 'on course'. I'll admit that at the beginning of the season I thought we would be 6-2 right now. With WKU and LT at home, and the weapons we were returning on offense (plus the Walter twins and Stewart), I thought we'd win those games- though I did expect to win high scoring affairs because of our youth on defense. If we win out this has to be considered a successful season at 8-4, though any close inspection of that record will reveal some big concerns- alleviated only if we storm through the finish with 4 blowout wins.

The biggest disappointments to me so far are:
1) How we actually performed in the WKU and LT losses- both were blowouts that were over by halftime
2) The fact that we are already out of the discussion for the West division (for all intents and purposes)
3) The way we lost the Texas game. I didn't expect us to beat Texas, but after their first game against Notre Dame I didn't see why we couldn't. To me the lesson from Texas- and it's not a new one to anyone who has competed at this level- be good at the little things because at some point they will either win or lose a game for you. The little things (to me) are- win the turnover battle (or at least don't lose it), no stupid penalties, no big plays allowed on D, and be solid in the kicking game. You don't have to win the kicking game, but you at least need a stalemate. The kicking game is not about talent- it is about effort. If we we would have been good at the little things we would have beaten Texas.
4) The uninspired performances in wins against FAU and Army
5) Driphus' uneven play. He is an enigma to me as a player. I still don't think we have seen a fully unleashed DJ and what he can do. He has the talent to be a reasonable knock-off of Chase Clement, but as many have noted he has some tendencies that keep that from happening, and therefore in situations where Chase would make a great play off a scramble DJ either throws it out of bounds too quickly, makes the decision to run and stops looking for receivers too soon, or runs and slides for a short gain rather than trying to make a play (though he has done this less this year thankfully). On the other hand, he has taken care of the ball very well and has generally been able to hit the receivers when they get open. He has not be the primary problem on offense, but a dynamic dual threat QB- a la Clement- coul have made a difference in our losses this year and- while he hasn't been the reason we have lost, he has the ability IMO to do so much more than he has done.

The reasons for optimism at this point for me:
1) We haven't lost any that we absolutely should have won (like ODU last year). We played it way too close to the edge with FAU and Army, but we got the wins and in an otherwise tough season that has to be considered progress. If we win three of the next four (USM) that will extend for the season and we will be 7-5. Not where I want to be and I understand the strength of schedule, but that is where we are and it could be worse.
2) Youth movement. I am not quite sure why we are having to play so many freshmen this year- and that is a concern- but I disagree with those who've implied there haven't been standouts. Zach Abercrumbia is a big, active DT that has made some plays and particularly impressed me with his motor. He is not bad as a green freshmen thrust into playing. I am optimistic that his experience this year coupled with a full year of S&C will lead to significant improvement for next season. He could be dominant for 3 years there for us. Sam Stewart should be our most dynamic player next year and I would expect his carries to go up. He has as much upside at the RB position as anyone we have had there in recent memory. Calvin Anderson has had his growing pains at LT, but he has gotten better and will only get better as he continues to add weight and experience. I'd expect him to be an all-conference player at least once before he graduates. Both freshmen corners have shown some promise and look like they can run. Mr. Ibe made a couple of very poor decisions last week, but I have to say I like his fire and intensity- he just needs to get it under control. That kid of attitude- within the rules- is sorely needed on defense.

Here is hoping for a 9-4 season with a finishing kick of 5 straight blowouts! Go Owls!

(11-03-2015 11:37 PM)UTOWL94 Wrote:  We are 8 games into the season with 4 to go and things have not gone as expected. Predictions had us going with a 10-2 record and competing for the CUSA championship. While we have a mathematically outside chance at winning our division then playing for the conference championship, the reality is that it will not happen. It would call for us to beat a team with a winning record which history shows that has not been easy. So far we have lost 4 games, three of them to teams with winning records: Baylor 7-0, Western Kentucky 7-2, La Tech 6-3. We lost to a pretty bad Longhorns team that currently sits at 3-5. The stat that jumps out on all of our four losses is that none of the games have been close. We were not competitive in any of the games.

We have beaten four teams (Wagner 0-8, North Texas 1-7, FAU 2-6, Army 2-6) combined records of 5-27. Army and FAU were won by a combined 8 points.

Based on this and on the eye test, the grade after the third quarter results is a D-. It was an F however we will give credit for the 4-4 record.
Offense - (D-) Offense has not looked good at all. Passing game has been below average, we have missed wide open receivers, DJ has looked like he has regressed from what we saw last year or perhaps he benefited from Taylor/Hull/Parks(healthy) or perhaps the O-line was much better last year. IMO I think our passing game benefited last year from conservative play calling and an awesome running game (Davis/Dillard). This year our running game has been average but has not really dominated a game. Prediction - Edmondson fired.

Defense (F) - we cannot stop the pass, cannot stop the run, turnovers are down (we have two interceptions through 8 games). Prediction-Thurmond retires.

Special teams (C-) - the return team with Walter/Stewart has been good. Probably the bright spot this year. However our kicking teams have struggled.

Last year we won 7 regular season games, those teams had a combined record of 36-63. We lost five games and those teams had a combined record of 44-22. The obvious we beat the really bad teams, lose to average to good teams. Based on this stat my prediction should be pretty accurate:
Win against UTEP 3-5
Lose against Southern Miss 6-3
Win against UTSA 1-7
Win against Charlotte 2-7

Final record 7-5 same as last year however this year we would not have beaten a team with a winning record unless we beat Southern Miss. We get invited to the New Mexico Bowl against New Mexico (4-4) or San Jose St. (4-4).

Prediction - coaching changes, DB is gone after the bowl loss. JK will not put up with a football program that thrives and brags about 7-5 seasons and beating teams with losing records.
Let it rain, Let it rain!
First of all apologies, I titled the thread 3/4 when it was really 2/3 however Friday nights game, I can now say we are three-fourths of the season complete.

As far as the game, UNBELIEVABLE. I did not see that coming. Things are worst than what I predicted. We are now losing to the really bad teams. A couple of you questioned my grade of D- for the offense. REALLY??? After Friday's game, it has become an F. We threw for 230 yards against the #118 passing defense with a fifth year senior and a potential NFL player in Parks. Is it talent or coaching? Simple answer- coaching and play calling. UTEP has been giving up 170 yards rushing per game. We gained 90 yet we have four good running backs. Is it talent or coaching? Simple answer - coaching. Bailiff needs to get rid of his OC and DC if he plans on having a chance of keeping his job.

The defense had an F so it could not have gotten worse but it did. We made the backups look like Fournette and Henry in the backfield. Is it coaching or talent? Simple answer - coaching.

With regards to the wonderful marketing excuse, that we're a young team, no one is buying it. UTEP had some ridiculous number of starters out yet all they did was punch us in the gut and walked away with a W.

With regards to the players quitting, I don't think the kids would do that however I don't think they're on the same page with the coaches. They lack motivation and is understandable when you see few to no adjustments being made by the coaches. The UTEP tight end was destroying us yet on the last drive to kick a field goal, we never changed our defense. It has to be taking a toll on the players.

With regards to coaching changes, you have to be delusional or are to emotionally tied to our current head coach to disagree. Our team has regressed and next year our schedule will be tougher, take a peek.
Stanford & Baylor(home) - losses
Army on the road - toss up, however after what they did this year to us, we can lean on the loss side.
PV(home) - win
Conference
@ La Tech - loss
@ So Miss - loss
North Texas (Home) - win
UTEP(home) - toss up
UTSA(home) - win
These are the teams I think we will face.
@ Middle Tenn - loss
Marshall (home) - toss up
@ ODU - loss

3 wins, 6 losses, 3 toss up......CHANGE IS REQUIRED.
