CMichfan: the phantom call on the NIU FG was huge! I don't know which official threw the flag but the head ref should've waived it off unless he agreed with it, or worse, made the call. It was absurb in the highest degree, and heavily impacted the outcome.

And no NIU or BG fan gives gives a **** about any of this tonight.

That's cute. Cause without it, NIU still wins 28-27 or 30-27 depending on what would have been a 2 point try.

NIUBrad: I like what is best for the conference....that's all. I am a MAC fan. UT's loss was not good for the conference...as I stated in my previous note, that sure doesn't mean NIU fans shouldn't enjoy the victory! I just didn't like that a really bad call in a critical sitution had such a big impact on the outcome. If it had been only a FG instead of a TD, that would've affected the play calling for UT in that last drive, plus there would've been more time on the clock to allow running plays. Doesn't matter now... it is what it is.

Unless Toledo plays better They might not have gone undefeated anyway. The rest of their schedule was the tough part after beating up their easy MAC schedule.

I thought before the game Ely was an average, at best QB. He is a game manager. You stop Toledo run game and let him try to beat you.

#4 top play on ESPN top 10 was our now injured QB and receiver converting 3rd & 39.

#1 was that fantastic one armed catch in the endzone by Galloday.

He's definitely an Alabama QB.

Actually, if you watch the replay, #23 who was the one penalized clearly pushed one of his teammates. I had to read what the leverage penalty involved. I'm not sure how often it happens where it's not called. But based on the leverage rule, it was not a phantom call at all.

although the push off by Golliday on 3rd and 11 that kept their winning drive going was as obvious as an offensive pass interference call can be

Geesh I feel like NIU just ran over a beloved neighborhood dog. Did people feel this sorry for NIU when BG won the MACC against NIU to ruin another BCS bowl for the Huskies and the conference? I must have missed that, or was it because NIU was not located in Ohio and did not matter as much? As it turns out, Toledo even letting NIU hang around for officiating to even matter when missing a star receiver in Lewis and their starting QB (replaced by a 3rd stringer) proves Toledo was not Access Bowl worthy anyway. I thought they were, but tonight proved otherwise. Be mad at Toledo, not NIU.

I agree with those points. It was, however, a great show.

I'd be interested to know if this wasn't one of the highest watched MAC mid-week games of all time (or at least in the last 10 years).

MAC fans watched. Think there weren't more than a few WMU fans watching? :) CMU fans also.

AAC fans watched, if only to root against Toledo. And also BG fans...

I agree with you MD. I thought that Toledo was the real deal, but they did not look like it last night. I would rather have them get knocked out of contention then to go to an access bowl when they were unworthy and end up embarrassing the conference by getting blown out.

I wanted UT to win...I wanted them unbeaten and ranked coming into the Doyt. It's going to be a fun night...but it could have been so much more.

UT had three shots from late 3rd qtr on to either salt it away or win and they went FG, missed FG, INT. Yeah..the defense let a 3rd string freshman lead two drives for TD's, but WTF happened to the offense?

Gotta credit NIU and their adjustments.

WMU's game with NIU played out the same way last November. Our offense started out with a bang, then went radio silent after halftime as NIU chipped away and eventually won.

To set the record straight: I rooted just as hard for NIU to win out when they were in a position to get ranked (and a BCS bowl slot) in the past.....this year UT was our best hope for conference recognition.....I agree with the comments that Toledo did not play very well last night...Ely clearly was not comfortable throwing the ball although you have to give NIU some credit for that as they were in his face quite a bit.

What a complete bummer of a result...absolutely nothing good came out of this...Hare is hurt and NIU is probably "toast" without him, and now we lost our ranked team that had a shot at an access spot. End of story and end of press for conference this season.

The leverage call that turned an NIU FG into a TD was a head-scratcher, but I didn't see anything else obvious. What did I miss?

They never showed a replay from the end zone angle behind the defense. You can't see that penalty from any other angle.

So no clue if it was a good call or not.

C'mon dude...they never showed one angle of that play to properly judge if it was a good call or not.

As a football official and a Rocket fan I will provide an honest and objective reply to this statement.

(1) yes the call for "leaping" was incorrect and ultimately led to a NIU TD...after the auto-1st down the Rocket defense did nothing to stop them so don't put all of the blame on the calling official
(2) yes there was a miss for pretty obvious OPI (offensive pass interference) on a push off that led to a 1st down and ultimately final/winning TD for the Huskies...but how does NIU complete a 4th down and forever on two occasions where the Rocket's pass D was nonexistent - don't blame the refs if they missed a call

Final thoughts:
(1) Credit NIU for winning the game without their best WR (and noted Toledo killer) and without their starting QB; you got to tip your hat to the Huskie players and coaching staff for staying in the game and then making the plays when they needed (including the final INT with 1:45 remaining) while Toledo did not. This is why NIU is a championship program and has been for a few years...congrats guys, you are the gold standard of MAC football right now
(2) Toledo missed a huge opportunity to win the game (injuries to the best NIU players) and has no to blame but themselves even with those missed calls noted above...some horrible play calling in the 2nd quarter and terrible QB play all night doomed the Rockets before the 'D' folded like a cheap tent in the second half

This is MACMadness people, expect more upsets to follow throughout November.
