Given SMU's rap sheet and current woes, the death penalty is not out of the question for Basketball. No basketball, no Division 1 sports.

So, who would replace them in the AAC and why?

um, the penalty has already been handed out. They weren't even eligible for the death penalty.

There is more out there. SMU dropping athletics is a very real possibility. Them and Hawaii. You heard it here first from a SMU fan.

North Texas and Rice, because Cincinnati replaced Louisville in the ACC.

North Texas wouldn't sniff the AAC. They are a poor FCS/D-2 team cloaked as an FBS team. Rice, with its academics, would be a good fit as they aren't generally too shabby in football.

When I saw the troll thread started by an SMU fan about Hawai'i dropping football, I knew this thread would be right around the corner. 07-coffee3

Has anyone even watched a Rice game? Huge stadium with about maybe 3k fans in attendance if that. Great academic school huge endowment and all. They need to work on getting fans to the games.

They and Hawaii go to the Zombie Football Conference, joining Wichita State, Long Beach State, Pacific, Hofstra, Northeastern, Boston U, UC Santa Barbara and Kansas.

Gee thanks. Pretty soon DavidSt will have some asinine thread about that very conference being formed.

Rice has had respectable attendance of 18296 (FCS Wagner), 20124 (Western Kentucky), 24409 (Army), and 18010 (Louisiana Tech on a Friday night). It has been accomplished with donors who purchase and donate large blocks of tickets to youth programs, and promotions such as veterans free (Army), and free tickets for kids (Louisiana Tech).

Even with the disappointing play of the team this year (2015 has been a throwback to the SWC days where the fans left the stadium after the Marching Owl Band performance at halftime because the Western Kentucky and Louisiana Tech games were already out of reach), the Homecoming game against Southern Mississippi should have ok attendance. The Thanksgiving weekend attendance for the final home game against Charlotte, though, might be scary.
