Student Attendance Men's Hoops
I can understand the Echo writers frustration with football, but why can't we even get 50% of the football attendance at men's basketball games especially students who are on campus for most weekday games? At least men's hoops has been competitive and entertaining to watch the past two seasons.

I agree men's hoops has been competitive and entertaining to watch. I have made the 90 drive 5 times a season for the last couple of years. I also attend the Western away game because it's only a 30 minute drive and again it's competitive.

My point is that even if you get 50% of football attendance it would be between 1,000-2,500 per game when combined with non-students.

Attendance plays a big part in recruiting also! Kids wanna play in front of, at least, a decent crowd! Trying to get up for a big game in front of a couple hundred people just doesn't get the juices flowing!

Just shows how nonsensical it is for the whiners over on the football threads to claim....'just win' and the fans will show up.

Basketball also eliminates the bad weather excuse, and makes no difference.

There will always be a different justification for the 'just win' crowd to not show up.

These are usually the same people who never even go to games, while complaining about attendance, while telling everyone why they should also not show up.

what are you guys drinking? the very reason no one is coming to the games because they are not competitive what so ever. Dunking the ball when you are up by 26 with less than 10 seconds isn't very interesting to people who really know anything about basketball.03-lmfao

Super with another ridiculous anti-dunking post. Means basketball season is almost here!

Sam, you are right. The season starts next week for the men and the no-dunking women.

I'm a bit surprised by this sentiment. I find Murphy's teams very difficult to watch. An inflexible, monotonous 2-3 defense coupled with poor shooting offenses produces sludgefests.

No amount of winning will make anyone want to watch a Rob Murphy coached team. Boring, no personality, I cannot conjure up any passion for EMU basketball with Murphy anywhere near the bench. The people have been voting for a new direction by staying away in droves. I can't blame the fans for the low attendance, it's a brutal watch.

Basketball was bad for over a decade. Like, REALLY bad (single-digit win seasons). No one ever said two decent years would fix all our attendance woes. We all know it takes much more than that.

but Murphy has turned a losing program into one that's actually competitive on a regular basis.

Bob the only thing you're passionate about is bashing EMU in any way shape or form while you drool over Keno Davis' picture. I call that your Pavlov Dog response.

And you forgot winning records.

Also, student attendance isn't usually the probably for basketball. On weekend games, students are often 50% of the crowd. Could we use a lot more? Of course. But I think the problem is the lack of general fans from the community/alumni that don't show up.

Scheduling some of the conference games at 12 noon isn't a real good way to draw alums and community to your games. What moron thought up those times?

I definitely agree on that. Makes absolutely no sense to me to hold every conference game at 2:00 or earlier in the weekend.

I have seen a progression to a more open offense. The current list of recruits leads me to believe this is a season for a run offense with plenty of fast break opportunities with of course dunks.

I agree with that.

Students are doing a pretty good job of supporting men's basketball and football, too.

I was at the Toledo game in early March and the student turnout was impressive.

I still wish more athletes would come out and watch. Sometimes we see a good number at a few early games and then it is like a only a few...

It would be nice if most athletes would attend say 2 or 3 FB games and at least a few (say 4 or 5) basketball games (men or women).

RE: Student Attendance Men's Hoops
People have been watching the NBA which practices a bullfighter defense wave as the guy goes by. College basketball is more entertaining because teams actually try to play defense. A good zone defense is a thing of beauty to watch. By the way when Princeton went to all those NCAAs with its slow down team style I'm sure the Princeton fans weren't critical because they won with it.
