Seahawks Add Pair of Guards for 2016-17 Season
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team roster will expand by two players for the 2016-17 season as Timber Tate of Thomasville, N.C., and Moriah Crisp of Waldorf, Md., have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UNCW.
"I am happy to announce the signing of two incredible young women who will improve our program on the court, in the classroom and in the Wilmington community," Coach Adell Harris said.
A 5-foot-11 shooting guard, Tate played three years at New Hope Academy before transferring to Forest Trail Academy. She helped New Hope win the 2015 National Independent School Athletic Association National Championship by averaging 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Tate served as a team captain and played in 70 consecutive games.
"Timber is a player I have recruited for the last three years," Harris said. "To say I am happy she is a part of our Seahawk family would be an understatement. Timber has an incredible motor and competes every possession on both ends of the floor like it's the last possession of a tie game.
"Timber is a knock-down three-point shooter that also defends and rebounds," Harris added. "You usually don't get all three of those things in one player. She instantly makes our program better."
Crisp, a 5-foot-2 point guard, is a three-year starter at Bishop McNamara High School who earned Honorable Mention All-Conference twice. She averaged 6.0 points and 7.0 assists per game while shooting 49 percent from the field. A member of the NEXT Sports 2016 Phenom Class, Crisp earned All-Tournament team honors at the Public/Private Challenge Tournament as a sophomore.
"Moriah is a true point guard that can play in transition as well as run the team in the halfcourt," Harris said. "I want to find 12-month players, which means their commitment to improvement is year-round. We're searching for players that connect preparation to performance and maintain a high level of success.
"Moriah lives in the gym and will be committed to improving her game year-round," the Seahawks' coach added. "She is a relentless worker and the true definition of the term 'gym rat.' I am excited about having her in our future."
