RE: Stats through 10.31.2015
Our passing defense numbers will look horrible for the rest of the year due to the astronomical numbers put up earlier in the season. However, our pass rush defense has gotten much better. Also, we have played some of the top passing offenses in the nation. Our pass defense could be "average", but when half of the teams played so far were top 10 passing teams like Tulsa, Cinci, BGSU, Ole Miss, the numbers will tend to look bad.

Think about how that SEC defensive unit looked against a Memphis passing offense. And see how other defenses have handled Ole Miss. Memphis held Ole Miss to 24 points. Ole Miss hung 43 on Alabama. 27 against Auburn. 23 against Tamu.

When you look at it that way, our defense is somewhat average.

Not enough credit is given to the special teams - another top 25 unit from Shibest and Elliott puts about 98% of kick-offs too deep into the end zone to return. Huge advantage.

Was it just me, or did Elliott send a kickoff through the uprights Saturday night?

Defense against the run = good to great.
Defense against the short pass = good to great.
Defense against the intermediate pass over the middle = bad.
Defense against the long pass (bomb, deep post) = awful.

Longest pass we gave up to Tulane was 35 yards but they didn't really attempt many or any that I can remember long post routes. We have started pressuring the qb more which has helped but this can lead to single coverage with Mallet on their receiver which is usually bad for us.

He might have.

I was at a bad angle for his missed FG and they didn't show replays most of the night on the big screen for whatever reason. I guess it was wide.

Yeah, people were shocked when Elliot missed a FG. Elliot is 52-69 in touchbacks. Probably half a dozen of those being returned were either returned out of the end zone or returned because we had a penalty and were kicking from the 25 or last week kicking from the 10. He also had 1 onside kick and 2 kicked out of bounds.

That's what I've been saying too. Between short to intermediate yardage, the memphis defense is pretty good, it's just the 20+ yards that kills them. It hurts stats wise that we have played 4 top 15 passing offenses that are really good

I am still wondering how in the hell we had to kick from the 10 yard line?

Yeah, our pass defense this week should be pretty good.

Yeah, our pass defense this week should be pretty good.

I didn't see Arthur Maulet on the field at all Saturday. He had the big pick 6 against Cincy, but seemed unable to stop biting on the fake.
