The American Champion In The Access Bowl Slot
From a numbers perspective, the odds are good that the American Conference Championship winner will get the at-large G5 invite to either the Fiesta or Peach Bowls. The current rankings (released today) and records of those in the hunt:
AP/Coaches Poll:
#15/#16 Memphis (8-0)
#18/#18 Houston (8-0)
#20/#20 Toledo (7-0)
#23/#23 Temple (7-1)
#37/#27 Navy (6-1)
I include Navy since they are currently 4-0 in the American but they do have road games at Memphis and at Houston. Toledo is a dark horse because of their remaining path (easier) to claim the MAC Championship and remain unbeaten. On the flip, if Toledo takes a loss that should drop them a lot more due to a weaker conference schedule.
I'll admit that I never felt the American would have this many teams ranked and that UC would not be one of them. Good for the conference, bad for us.
According to the latest Bowl projections from Jerry Palm, Houston plays Iowa in the Peach Bowl. Where is UC projected? Wait...wait for it...the Miami Beach Bowl against Middle Tennessee State on Monday, December 21st. At least it's in Florida...

At this point, we're just playing for pride. We still have a (remote) chance at 9-3, but 8-4 looks more likely. I really don't care which bowl we're in but would like a go against a P5 opponent.

The playoff poll comes out Tuesday evening. AP Coaches is not relevant. I am rooting for Toledo to lose a game though.

The odds of a P5 opponent are slim and none. The bowl tie-ins this year are worse than last year . Aside from an Access Bowl (which is not guaranteed) the only bowl games this year that offer a P5 are the Military Bowl and the Birmingham Bowl. Navy is already locked in to the Military Bowl unless they get the Access Bowl. We are competing with Memphis, Houston and Temple for the Birmingham Bowl. Odds are we will get one of the games against a C-USA, maybe even a Sun Belt or MAC school regardless of whether we finish 8-4 or 9-3.
#1/2/3/4/5 The Military Bowl versus ACC. If Navy is eligible, they will automatically take this spot.
#1/2/3/4/5 The Birmingham Bowl versus SEC
#1/2/3/4/5 The St. Petersburg Bowl versus Conference USA
#1/2/3/4/5 The Hawaii Bowl versus Mountain West or BYU
#1/2/3/4/5 The Miami Beach Bowl versus Conference USA
#6 The Boca Raton Bowl versus Mid American
#7 The Cure Bowl versus Sun Belt

Remember last year when Bohn said he had a good bowl lined up until OKState won on a miracle. I wonder if he could pull some strings again this season for a good bowl.

My guess is yes. Taking down an undefeated and ranked Houston at their place would be a good way to start the final four game swing. UC's high flying offense and recent history of selling bowl tickets will make the Bearcats attractive for a contracted slot where a P5 conference can't supply a team with six wins.

P5 conferences with how many bowl eligible teams thus far...
ACC - 5 (2 teams with 5 wins)
B12 - 4 (1 team with 5 wins)
B10 - 7
P12 - 3 (5 teams with 5 wins)
SEC - 6 (1 team with 5 wins)

Could you imagine the uproar from Big XII country if Notre Dame gets in over an unbeaten Big XII team?

Baylor and TCU still have to play each other. One will get a boost from that. Same with OSU and MSU.
