Agreed, i asked the same question in another thread. Neither of the two MAC games was on one of the three ESPN channels.

Let me guess. Miami is reporting 13,642 in attendance, but in reality, there are actually 347 in the "stadium".

If so, they wouldn't be the only ones. And I'm not talking about the MAC.

RE: Why is Miami playing a home game on Thursday on ESPN3
I have a question (I might have overheard something on a telecast):

Are each MAC team now required to make a mid-week appearance?

(Kind of like spread the joy or misery, as you see it).

I don't know. NIU's been playing 4 midweek games, usually 2 at home and 2 on the road, for years. It's ridiculous. Most of ours have been on E$PN2 I believe, but never on E$PN. Sure hope we never have any on E$PN3 - that wipes out the whole point of weekday games, and makes it not worth the money we're getting from E$PN in this deal. It's already not worth the money IMO. In general I'm fine with the MAC but this TV deal is the one reason for MAC teams to say goodbye if at all possible.

And we've only gotten those ESPN2 telecasts because we have been good. If we're ever bad again, i'm sure we'll see our awesome ESPN weekday coverage relegated to ESPN3.com.

If teams are going to play midweek games for "exposure" then ESPN needs to actually televise them (not ESPN3.com). Put the games on ESPN or ESPN2, then put the so-called game that ESPN deems not good enough on ESPNU.

I'm not even a Miami or Buffalo fan (i am a MAC fan), but i don't think they should have been put on ESPN3.com while they televise (ESPNU) a Sun Belt game between two schools that were 1-AA not that long ago.

My guess is that ESPN scheduled these games with the intent of selling them off to a 3rd party (CBSSports, ASN, etc) but was unsuccessful. Per the new contract ESPN owns the rights to 3rd party broadcasts so it is in their best interest to find a buyer. ESPN was able to see off WMU v EMU but found no takers for Buffalo v Miami, hence its relegation to ESPN3.

Yup...ESPN wanted 2 games on Thursday nights from the last week of October and on so that they could sell off the best one of those games to CBSSN while putting the other on ESPN3.com.

If the second game were on ESPNU or ESPNews then I wouldn't have an issue but this just stinks for all involved.

Now that ESPN3 games are on cable, what is the difference in cable availability of ESPN3 games and ESPNU / ESPNews?

Because the MAC ESPN3 games (at least NIUs) have not been on that cable channel and this Miami UB game this past Thursday was not either.

That's not the question I was asking ... I was wondering about #m of households ... but it does point out that with the shift in putting some ESPN3 games on cable, "ESPN3" by itself no longer means what it used to mean ... we need to distinguish "ESPN3&C" from "ESPN3-OO" (online-only).

RE: Why is Miami playing a home game on Thursday on ESPN3
Here is the deal. We (MAC) sold the rights to our games to ESPN. ESPN sold some games to CBSSports network. Thursday night these two games were slated as CBSSN/ESPN3. CBSSN made its selection about a week before the game.

As for attendance, I would say between 2 and 3,000. It was a close game and almost everyone stayed to the end as basically only the hardcore fans were there. 12,000+ was the official announced crowd.
