I'm disappointed in 2 areas:
1) For all of the accolades that our commissioner has received for our conference's exposure on TV, and the resulting positive publicity; the bowl associations appear weak if/when multiple members have very, very good years. Not sure what could be done to accommodate a year like this one, but if it's fair to give the commissioner credit for things that go well (TV access), it's fair to charge the commissioner with a reasonable solution to this issue.
2) Until recent years, the Liberty Bowl has provided a great home for the Tigers' conference champions. That association ended recently and that has resulted in a relatively large gap in bowl access. That's personally disappointing.
I almost never disagree with you, but I don't know what Aresco could have done about our bowl situation. It's not like he was turning down offers from better bowls.
And he did take the initiative to do two good things:
1) Supposedly was the driving force behind the G5 Access slot (tried to get it for the AAC originally)
2) Had the conference start its own bowl in Miami.
As for the Liberty Bowl, they doubled their payout to step up in class and snag a P5 matchup between the B12 and the SEC. Can't exactly blame Aresco or Memphis for that one.
I believe that if we keep conference together, we have an excellent chance at getting the Liberty Bowl next bowl cycle. The AAC was more of an unknown quantity last time bowls were being made.
Every other year our bowls aren't bad. It's just that every odd year, they are bad, and that just happens to be the year we have a lot of good teams.
Best case for this year is
Memphis/Houston/Temple to Playoffs or Peach
Memphis/Houston to B'ham vs. SEC
Temple to Hawaii vs. BYU or
Temple to Miami Beach vs. an extra "P5" team
Navy has the Military tied up this year, but next year it reverts back to an all AAC bowl.
ECU, Cincinnati, USF, Tulsa and whoever else might get bowl eligible are just going to have bad bowls this year.
