That is actually a very good question. I'm not sure who initiated it but we had them in schools when I started. Our district has since gotten rid of them.

One of the officers however once bragged about how he "body slammed" a kid during a fight.

Easy answer. The cops are in schools so the teachers/admin don't have to deal with the issue we saw recently. Teachers/admins basically pawning off their responsibilities to someone else in order to avoid issues. So, basically, people that are trained to deal with kids pawned off that responsibility to people that apparently are not trained to deal with kids. Like I said, just an other example of the outstanding incompetency of our school administrators.

You might be correct. However, it could have been from increased pressure from the parents themselves. If you read the article, you would see that many of these officers were requested after incidents like Columbine and SandyHook. Although I did not intend for this thread to go there, once again, the issue of gun shootings rears it's ugly head.

I can understand the cops maybe serving as a detriment to prevent school shootings etc. However, a cop should never be called to deal with an idiot that won't give up her cell phone.

On this we can agree. Once the principal called the cop, he relinquished all authority. This is one of the reasons why I rarely ever write a referral. Doing that is simply admitting that you cannot handle a situation. I have usually been able to defuse a situation by talking kids down from a destructive or aggressive mood.

I have a feeling cops were initially called into schools to keep the lawyers away.

RE: Police officers aren't trained for kids
As a former LEO, the training to deescalate a situation was not extensive. LEO training in dealing with children or teenagers is virtually none existent as well.

After recent events in our society, training for this should be necessary. The only problem with training is WHAT training will this replace. The tax payer cannot afford to train officers past the typical 6 - 12 month academy. The there is the existing hundreds of thousands of existing LEO that one must train who are already receiving a veteran salary.

The price keeps climbing with no increase revenue from the tax payer with stagnant wages and low employment growth.

The future of policing will be drones. They see everything and honestly can provide better service in many situations (especially traffic enforcement or anything that a patrol vehicle can perform). Video tape of a auto accident, suspect on foot fleeing, etc

The future for the LEO will be inside structures and on a personal level. It's also more dangerous! Glad I changed careers!
