The Biggest game that you've probably never heard about
Right now I'm in Birmingham Alabama at Legion Field marveled once again by how many people are out here already for the 74th Annual Magic City Classic between my Alabama State Hornets and The Alabama A&M Bulldogs. The Classic has grown into the largest attended game in FCS football with 67,000+ in attendance and about another 40,000 or so who never come inside of the stadium but enjoy a Mardi Gras style tailgating area that extends the entire Legion Field area. But when you ask people about the biggest rivalry in FCS football the Magic City Classic almost never gets mentioned despite the amazing attendance numbers, the close contest, and tailgating that starts the week before the game. The Magic City Classic has about a $25 million dollar impact on Birmingham's economy in just one weekend.

The MCC has grown into a commendable event, but let's face it, regardless of statistics like attendance and economic impact, when it comes to Classics, there is the Bayou Classic, and then there's everyone else. That's the Granddaddy Classic.

How is the Bayou Classic The Grandaddy of Classics when its only 40 years old?

It's the "Granddaddy" in the sense that it's easily the most famous "classic". Nobody else is close, which is why you had to create this thread. And I seriously doubt anyone in the 1930s was calling your game the "Magic City Classic" either. SU and Grambling have been playing since the 1920s, it's just been billed as a "classic" since 1974.
Look, you guys have a nice classic buried in the middle of Alabama. Good for you, and us Jaguars enjoy competing versus both of you. We're going to beat both Magic City Classic teams this year (one down, one to go).
But don't forget your place.

And how long do you think ASU/AAMU have been playing? The game moved to Birmingham in 1940 and took on The name Magic City Classic and was then the largest sporting event between HBCUs at the time. The Bayou Classic is one of my favorite events but it is not the Grandaddy of HBCU Cassics.

Loved watching Alabama A&M's band when they played at Cincinnati earlier this year. They pretty much stole the show. Everyone was watching them before the game and when they performed they received a large ovation from the crowd.

Speaking of Cincy, is Tubbs on the hotseat up there?

There's a segment of the fan base unhappy with him, but I don't think his seat is warm just yet. The defense is extremely young (starting six freshmen). If the team struggles next year the AD's hand may be forced not to extend his contract.

His name came up on Finebaum yesterday for the Miami opening

Anything's possible. I just don't see mutual interest (but I could be wrong). If he leaves UC will be fine. We have gone through this many, many times (Dantonio, Kelly, Jones).

You seem hung up on the word "granddaddy". OK, fair enough. The Bayou Classic is far and away the most famous classic.

No doubt it is but for the past decade or so it has not been on the same level as the Magic City Classic.

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody hears it, who cares? The Bayou Classic is the most well-known, famous Classic. People across the country know about it, whereas nobody outside central Alabama has ever heard of the MCC. That's the whole reason you made this post!
Heck, the Bayou Classic has a new trophy this year because the original was requested for permanent display by the Smithsonian Institution.
Those kinds of things make the BC #1, no matter how many warm bodies huddle together in downtown Birmingham for the Magic City Classic each year.
BTW, the Bayou Classic's estimated economic impact on New Orleans is $50 million. That's not chump change, LOL.

The Bayou Classic is living off of the good ole days kinda like Notre Dame football. Crowds have dwindled all the way down into the 30,000s up until last year where attandance went back up to 47,000. Yes tons of people go to NOLA for the Bayou Classic but how many actually care or go to the game?

Last year's attendance at the BC was 57,000. And yes, comparing the BC to Notre Dame is entirely appropriate.

Hey I'll be at the Bayou Classic this year too! Hopfully Southern will win out until then which would make The Bayou Classic the Western Division title game again.
