At this point, I think I'm going to have to agree. A BIG part of the problem is the lack of talent, but really, this defense is just not improving.

I think a reasonable solution after this season is to demote McCaslin to a position assignment, and see who's available on the market, or give one our other coaches who has DC experience a shot at the job. It couldn't possibly hurt...

RE: Game Day: WMU
As far as I can tell, Jay Peterson (who is currently the RB coach) has 8 seasons of FBS experience as a defensive coordinator: 2004-08 at EMU, 2011-13 at Miami (OH). He's held defensive position coaching jobs at EMU, Northwestern, Miami, and Illinois State for a number of years as well.

Why not give him a shot? I'll see if I can pull up some numbers on how his defenses have performed.

Something I touched on before on defense and that is when the lead is "out of reach", I continue to see the starters from Lbs to the back end. A common theme with elite programs is when the lead is "out of reach" winning or losing, they get the 2/3's on depth chart reps. It gives youngsters the much needed game experience and builds depth at the position. Typically they will do this after 1st/2nd series in 3rd quarter through end of the game. And gives youngsters a chance to "showcase". This is great way to create competition as well instead of a position being "entitlement"

Are we positive we're regressing? We were down 44-0 at the half to WMU last year in a game that ended up being a 44 point loss. Last year, we lost 65-0 to an unranked SEC East team. This year we lost to a top 5 SEC West team 44-22. Same number of FBS wins as last year. The offense has scored more points than last year by a number in the triple digits.

It's not a pretty sight, but are we sure it's regression?

In 13 MAC games, Creighton has lost by more than 14 points 10 times.

I guess I am going back a bit further. Under the previous coaches we were not only competitive, but able to beat WMU and CMU. Now, we're not even close. I am not giving up, but am definitely concerned about the direction things are going.

Game Day: WMU
I was at the game and near some families of recruits and players. Not a good night for EMU.

- Recruits said EMU pitches the chance to play on grey turf while other programs pitch the chance to win.

- Lots of questioning why CC didn't rotate in more players. "There's more guys on the roster busting their butt than just those starters." Also, questioned decision to kick the field goal that Mulder missed.

- Recruits parent remarked how current players were giving girls volleyball players, who had walked past on the track call me signs in game, and how players were laughing and joking late in the blow out.

- As Western left the field they held the Michigan MAC trophy up and upon funneling into their tunnel held it up to the Eastern recruits and told them to touch as they would never touch it at Eastern. The recruits did and the Broncos players told them to come to Western.

Not a good showing for Eastern tonight, which is a shame because it started out well.

Also, Bell left after a few plays due to injury and Rachal (spell check?) was carted off due to ankle injury

This is what I was afraid of: Creighton is in over his head. He looks and talks the part, but that's it.

Creighton probably could've beat Cubit too. We are talking about regression without recognizing that WMU has a really good program right now. I have no problem giving credit where credit is due. Fleck was a dynamite hire. It still remains to be seen with Creighton, but when you know your defense is going to give up 50-60 points before the game even starts, it's not a good sign. A lot needs to change next year, or we will have a pretty extensive "head coach search" thread on this board yet again.

RE: Game Day: WMU
Well last year it was 51-7 and 42-0 at halftime. I think we all know the defensive side of the ball needs some drastic fixes. Roback had a decent game but again 2 interceptions and he really needs to improve that since for the season he has as many interceptions as TDs.

I believe on defense some JUCOs and a new coordinator needs to be in the mix and maybe some other defensive coaching changes.

I don't believe in a minute that Creighton is selling a grey field to recruits over moving the program in a winning direction. A coach with a .571 winning record prior to EMU is not selling artificial turf over winning.

If we can get some impact defensive players, a better scheme and maybe teach rugby tackling (Toledo for example) has I see better things for our future since the offense appears to have promise. And yes the offense this year has shown great improvement over CC's first year.

By the way its easy to get on the defense when your 4 turnovers put them there. We need to learn to play error free football, look at our turnover ratio compared to our opponents that's one area that hasn't gotten better. And our four turnovers lead to WMU scoring 28 points.

So if you want to get on CC about something get on him about the team not improving in the basic fundamentals of football.

Complain all we want about the defense, but 4 turnovers, 3 which led directly to short fields and 21 points, is what lost this game.

The defense has injury, youth, and talent excuses. What is Robacks excuse? As I've said before, Roback can't win games by himself (doesn't need to), but he can lose them with these terrible turnovers.

Too bad Bell was still injured, it actually looked like the game plan was to rotate him in early.

Toledo fan here. I have been around long enough to remember games before the renovation. What is wrong with the east stands? Watched the game last night you could feel the tide turning before half, then the flood gates opened. Too bad, hoping you'd send fleck home packing. The west is the deeper division again so I feel for you guys, I always root for you over the other directionals and I enjoy coming up every other year for games. Don't know much about your coach or player situation, just stay the course. We rode through a tough stretch during and after the Amstutz era where we were not playing good football. It's painful to watch.
