That's a pretty safe statement to make considering Fields is no longer on the team to ever prove you wrong. Next time you should also include illness and disciplinary actions as reasons that someone could start in place of another person though if you really want to cover yourself. Fields easily could have started at the 3rd place clinching game at UTEP last season. He played more minutes than Caver did in one of the biggest games of the year, and Caver wasn't injured (he was ill).

Fields is not a mid major point guard. I suspect he will have a decent career at Radford.

Fields isn't even in the same realm as Caver. Not even close

No, Fields wasn't as good as Caver last season. No argument there. Was simply replying to the king of the overstatement who said that Fields would never start a game at ODU. He came very close to starting in the game at UTEP last season which going into it was a very important game to secure a top 4 finish in CUSA. Many things can happen during the course of a season and he has no way of knowing that over the next 3 years had Fields remained he would never be called upon to start.

Who would have thought that 6'-7" walk-on (Vassor) would be ODU's starting center against St. Joe's and Purdue a couple of seasons ago (for example)? Things all too often don't go exactly as planned.

WTF does this even mean?

It means that you are stating your opinions as absolute facts, and facts that you can neither prove, nor be proven wrong about. No problem with it stated as an opinion. BTW, cursing isn't necessary.

If Fields resume was so great, why didn't he have scholarship offers out of high school? Why did he walk on at ODU? Face it, they needed bodies at PG and grabbed whoever they could grab. I think everyone knows what Bazemore was, a raw athletic talent that was molded into an NBA player.....what does that have to do with Fields?

So I guess we shouldnt have taken a chance with Taylor Heinicke either.

http://pilotonline.com/sports/college/ol...c8877.html

"Great numbers by Heinicke, no doubt. But two other numbers - 6-foot-1 and 182 pounds - were keeping college recruiters away."

Travis fields averaged 17.7 points per game along with 5.5 assists and 2.6 steals per contest as a senior. If you really think he is a garbage basketball player, go play a pick up game with him so he can hustle you out of your shoes. With his stats, and accolades, yes he size kept him from getting offers, just like our record setting quarterback whos name shows up on an NFL roster...after 1 offer out of high school.

Keep being that guy.....

Remember this guy?

Wasn't he committed to ODU? I forgot the details of his release, but he was in the original Ahmad Caver recruiting class... 6'10, 225.

Hope ODU gets him. If they do then I hope he doesn't just come in to keep the bench warm his first year like (6'-9" with 2 years to play) Kah did last season.

I think this would be a major get for the team and is a piece we need filled. Had 23 offers coming out of HS. Was a solid list.

He went to high school in Nebraska... if he's trying to get closer to home that would hurt us too.

To suggest we have enough big men on this team is quite possibly one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read.

We lost Talley and have Kah and Carver as backups to Porter and Stith.

To act as though we couldn't use this guy is quite frankly, delusional. Not sure why I'd expect anything else at this point though.

These are some strange comments since you mentioned Fields within them. To say that he "didn't work out" is simply not accurate. He was the back-up point guard as a true freshman ahead of the other guys that had college playing time at other schools. Had he not transferred to Radford he may have ended up as the starter depending on what is going on with Caver.

To say that this year you have "seen them shoot for the stars" (as opposed to last year) ... I think any player that wins Tidewater Player Of The Year, or any player that wins Virginia Player Of The Year, is considered a star player. Fields won both awards as well as 3 state championships. How many of these "stars" that they have recruited this season had a better resume than that?

Im sorry but Fields is not a great player and wasnt even on scholarship. High school awards really dont mean much, i have 2 buddies; one was Southeast District player od the year over BJ Upton and the other won over David Wright. Neither played one inning in college.

Giles, you are moving the goal post on this one. The topic is related to recruiting from the high school level, not what did you do afterwards. According to you coach Jones has just now gone off in pursuit of 'stars'. I take it now that you must mean recruiting services 'stars' since you are attempting to down play any awards that high school players obtain. Guess what, those recruiting services often don't hit the mark either (Kent Bazemore for example).

"Fields is not a great player and wasn't even on scholarship." --- He was a great player in High School. Three state championship trophies with him running the point, Tidewater POY award, and State POY Award attest to that. In case you forgot, he was told that he would be getting a scholarship after his freshman year by coach Jones according to the VA Pilot. Peyton Pervier was on scholarship. Was he therefore a great player?

"High School awards really don't mean much." --- Unless and until you want them to. I could name you a lot of former Virginia High School player of the year winners, or other types of Virginia player of the year winners from high school that went on to have very substantial college careers. A few of them even ended up at ODU and at least one of them went on to the NBA (hint, Atlanta).

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people got votes for Southeastern District Player Of The Year ahead of BJ Upton. He graduated in 2002 from Greenbrier Christian Academy, a private school that has never been a member of the Southeastern District. Congrats to your buddy for winning the award in the Southeastern District though.

By the way, David Wright (Hickory High School) earned All-State honors in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and was named Virginia Player of the Year in 2001. He also won the Gatorade Virginia Player Of The Year in 2001. If your 'buddy' actually did win a district award over him then it is pretty obvious that the fix was in.

Hilariously misinformed but par for the course really.
