Who First MAC Coach to Go
Names being tossed around:

PJ Fleck
Matt Campbell
Dino Babers
Rod Carey

I think PJ and Campbell will be the top targets.

I think PJ and Campbell will be the top targets.

1. Campbell. Fielded a consistent winning team, consistently good recruiting classes, won bowl games, only thing he hasn't done is beat NIU, and subsequently won the MAC. Call it the "safe" pick. Minnesota a good scenario.

2. Carey. Won MAC West division two years in a row, won MAC title in 2014, consistently good recruiting classes, only thing he hasn't done is won a bowl game. Could make an argument for #1, but thinking about how G5 programs might look at up-and-coming coaches, AD's might think of Campbell as the "safer" pick. Indiana, his alma mater and where he played college ball, a good scenario.

3. Babers. Won MAC East division last year, good recruiting classes, high-octane offense will make him a sexy pick for someone looking to make a splash. However, down-sides including not giving a **** about defense and yet to be seen whether his offense will work against decent P5 competition (only P5 wins are against Indiana, Maryland, and Purdue, all of whom are at the bottom of the Big Ten when BG played them). Crash-and-burn potential if put in the wrong fit, i.e. bottom level P5 school without the talent to run his system, such as Purdue.

4. Fleck. Media and recruiting services darling, but results on field have not yet equaled hype generated by aforementioned institutions. Similar to Babers in that someone looking to make a splash might consider him a sexy pick to generate attention, but, also like Babers, crash-and-burn potential is high if put in the wrong situation. Illinois has been mentioned, but as we saw from Tim Beckman, it'll take more than a boat, a couple of oars, and a bat-**** crazy head coach to turn that program around.

Unfortunately for the MAC, Matt Campbell isn't leaving Toledo this quickly. Especially for a mediocre job like Minnesota.

As of right now in the fall of 2015, Illinois seems a much more dead end football job than Minnesota.

Babers go. Babers struggle without star QB to make him look good.

Seriously? Kill's initial contract at Minnesota was for $1.2 mil/year. His extension, signed in 2014, raised it to $2.2 mil/year. Not to mention the Gopher program is in much better shape now.

You really think Campbell would say no to coaching a B10 team and making at least double what he makes now?

Keep telling yourself that. We said the same thing about Kill and look what happened.

You probably also said the same thing about Pinkel before he left for Missouri.

LOL.

You sound like NIU fans talking about Doeren.

If a P5 school wants him, he will be gone.

Nah, we knew Doeren was gonna go if the team won the MAC again in 2012. We were prepared for it the second time around.

If the talk about Campbell is true (see recent ESPN article), then he would probably really like living in the Twin Cities.

The "Carolina" is your clue here, Owen.

Probably, but only Campbell has a shot at being successful. Hopefully, he takes the right job. As sexy as South Carolina sounds, I don't think that is it. It has taken legendary coaches (holtz, Spurrier) to make that school a winner, and it took an SEC guy in Spurrier to make them league title contender (which he never actually won).

Campbell has to stay North. Minnesota seems like a better fit. Glenn Mason (another Ohio guy) had Minnesota going good. Kill also showed it isn't a deadbeat job. If he can be like either, Minnesota is an annual bowl team (with lower expectations, and Minnesota seems to have learned from firing Mason). Then, Campbell has his choice of going to a true blue blood, or stay at Minnesota with a huge contract, and with the B10 money, Minnesota could keep him if he becomes Pinkel Pt. 2 (no national title chance, but getting paid like a championship coach, while having a nice record). Or, with his age, he could really cash in with one great year at Minny when one of the can't say no jobs opens.
