FIU Stadium gets a new Tenant
More importantly, FIU gets some rent from it and a $450,000 one time contribution.

Quote:Meanwhile, inside The Stadium Club, Miami FC officially announced it would join the revived North American Soccer League and begin play in 2016 at FIU Stadium.

At a presser attended by FIU president Mark Rosenberg and athletic director Pete Garcia, Garcia announced Miami FC owner Ricardo Silva ponied up a $450,000 gift to FIU's athletic department. My first thought after "whoa!" was "I want to see that lease."

Length: Three years with a two-year Miami FC option.

Rent: $10,000 per game, FIU's standard rate, plus $2,500 if visiting teams want to use the field for practice. Miami FC will pay the operational costs for each game.

Tickets: FIU gets $2 per ticket. Miami FC hopes for 10,000 per game. Let's say they get 4,000, which I think would be a good number. That's $8,000 per game for FIU.

Concessions: What FIU would normally get from the concessionaires goes to Miami FC.

Parking: Miami FC gets it.

Miami FC will set aside some internships for FIU students.

What does this mean $$$ wise for FIU, well aside from the one time payment of $450,000. NASL has a 40 game season annually (20 home/away), just with that, FIU earns an additional $200,000 ($10,000 per game). Also, I agree that there is no way they get 10,000 in attendance, let's say they average 4,000 as DJN suggests, that would be a total of $160,000 ($8,000 per game). Lastly, remember that there are at least 3 cups and playoff to consider, it is not unreasonable to think that there could be at least 4/5 more home games which would be an additional $100,000 or thereabouts. So, for 3 years, you are looking at a nice sum, anywhere from $1.4MM to $1.8MM. Not bad, could cover a big chunk of the new COA for the first 3 years. Go F I U!

RE: FIU Stadium gets a new Tenant
I wonder if there's language in the lease that changes the terms if Miami gets an MLS franchise, which you think would eventually happen to give Orlando City a derby partner. Because FIU Stadium would still be big enough for an MLS team (12 MLS stadiums have capacities between 18,000-25,000, with Orlando and DC United's new stadiums in that range).

EDIT: I now see that there's already something of a plan for an MLS team and that there's a tentative deal to build next to Marlins Park, even though MLS didn't support such a plan earlier. FIU would still seem to be an apporpriately sized venue, plus it's plug-and-play, but if they really want a new stadium, then there I go.

David Beckham wants to build a soccer specific stadium and has identified a site near Marlins stadium for this purpose. Per DJN in the above link...

Length: Three years with a two-year Miami FC option. That three years coincides with the possible debut of David Beckham's MLS team. Miami FC's folks say they think this can be a two-team county. Maybe they're right, if they market themselves as the cheaper, more family-friendly option to MLS (and more accessible to family-heavy suburbia). Or, maybe there's a part of them that's betting Miami politics does what Miami politics does and the MLS team never achieves birth. If they're wrong and things don't look good, they don't have to exercise the option.

Ah, skimmed right on past that ...

Having a major and minor-league team in the same city/region often doesn't work out, at least as far as the minor-league team's box-office viability goes. The New York Cosmos are only getting around 5,000 a game. A lot of MLS teams have secondary teams (often bearing the creative name of "MLS Team II"), but they're all in the USL.

Your best bet is that Miami MLS doesn't come to pass.
