A lot of G5 coaches are about to get some P5 coaching positions.

Kills have been having health issues. Having seizures on the sideline during the game.

Kill didn't quite achieve the same level of success that Glen Mason did, but he was still considerably better than Tim Brewster. After that debacle, it's fortunate that Minnesota didn't go full-Illinois with its football program. Good luck to Jerry Kill with retirement and taking care of his health issues.

Frank Leahy understands.

Jerry Kill, sadly, has a history of seizures. I remember after the Gophers lost to New Mexico State, he had an episode on the sidelines.

May God be with him.

The idea that "college football coach" was a 24/7/365 job would have seemed insane, as recently as the 1970s. But that's where we are now. Men like Jerry Kill (who is not that old -- 54 yrs.) won't be able to do that on a long-term basis.

RE: Minnesota Coach Jerry Kills is retiring effective immediately
yep...
only 3 guys have been at their schools since 1999- Beamer at Va Tech, Stoops at Oklahoma, and Ferentz at Iowa. Only 13 guys will have been at their schools for at least 10 years after this year. Only 27 guys coached in the 00's decade.

The days of the Beamers, Paterno, Bowden's roaming the sidelines for 30+ years are over IMO.

A lot more stuff was going on than what has been reported....such has his wife having to sit in a chair to watch him sleep because he didn't want to take the medicines so he could keep coaching and so much more.

It was killing him and it came time to take care of his health so he is still around for his grandkids.

Well, that's a real shame.

I have a lot of respect for him.

I agree and I think he did a lot for what he had. Although B1G means football, Minnesota is first and foremost hockey. That said, Minny would be a good place for a young up-and-comer.

1) this is the correct decision. Even if Kill went 8-5 every year, from here on out, how much longer would he be able to keep up the effort required?

Good for you coach. You're doing it right.

Thank you for helping to get Minnesota football back up to a respectable position.

2) the power of Coach Kill -- the reason that every program he's taken over has risen steadily up, from SIU to NIU to Minnesota (and before) -- is due to one simple fact: his staff doesn't change much.

If it was my decision, I would therefore promote Claeys to head coach and Limegrover to assistant head coach. Hire another coach to fill in, as needed, because Claeys would still call the defense.

Nothing else changes.

If they're smart, that's what they'll do.

But I don't put it past President Kaler to hire a new AD and give that person the keys to hire his/her own football head coach. Sad.

RE: Minnesota Coach Jerry Kills is retiring effective immediately
This is getting weird.

There are 4 teams on Iowa's schedule this year that already have interim coaches this year.

ILL, North Tex, MD, Minn

Plus there are 3 other teams that have first year coaches

Wisc, Neb, Pitt

Plus 3 other teams with coaches on hot seat.

Iowa St, Indy, Purdue

which means 10 out 12 teams Iowa plays this year may have coaching changes in a 12 month period.

I'm sure Iowa fans remember the last time the Hawkeyes played a Minnesota team with an interim head coach. 05-stirthepot

Maybe Kill will go on hiatus for a couple years, get bored and come back to coaching.

Something like Urban Meyer?

If healthy I think he elevates the program like he did NIU.
They are a smart team well coached had to be hard to recruit.

I've always liked Kill, and this post I saw shared earlier just confirms that in the sleazy world of college football, he's a classy guy. Hope he gets well.
