RE: Bearcat Basketball Preseason Thread
From a small sample size (Red & Black Scrimmage) I agree that Jenifer may be the missing ingredient from Mick's program the past few years; a guard who has both the speed and the instincts to push it down the court at every opportunity. If that adds a half dozen points a game that's probably a couple more wins each of the last few seasons. This team could be very special.

6 more points a game and UC is 30-4 instead of 23-11. Offensive improvement is the only way UC will make a big leap in the ability to be a very special team.

We thought the same thing about Deshaun Moorman after the scrimmage two years ago. Just sayin'.

Not much to entice season ticket sales there.

the mindset of Cincinnati fans are, if you win, they'll come out to watch. Sometimes Huggs old teams didn't have scary OOC schedules either.

The difference there, is that Morman wasn't any bit a facilitator. Jenifer can drop dimes left and right, just like Morman could jump out of the gym. I'm not saying Jenifer is some elite player, he just has a natural talent for creating. That's not something you teach, just as height or athleticism aren't something you teach. The only real problems he'll face, will be with speed and decision making. As for Morman, who knows? Maybe he was able to get by people like crazy, who can really say when we didn't play him much at all?

The only two times in the last 15 years that a team has won a championship and didn't have an AdjO in the Top 10 was UConn in 2011 (18th ranked offense) and UConn in 2014 (39th ranked offense). Both of those teams happened to have a triple-threat-do-it-all-all-american point guard who could control every aspect of the game.

You can win in the regular season, especially in the AAC, with Micks current strategy of focusing the bulk of your energy on defense. But you can't win in the tourney like that. Against elite teams UC's defense won't be good enough to overcome their lack of offense. Also, everyone team ratchets up another level during the tourney which negates UC's usual method of just out-working and out-hustling teams. Mick has got to either bring in better offensive talent or re-think his offensive strategy.

Spot on. I've heard a college coach (not anyone on Houston's current staff) refer to Cronin's offense as a "high school offense."

There's no doubting Cincy's toughness, athleticism or defensive prowess. But until Cronin learns how to coach offense, there's a glass ceiling in place.

From what i watched tonight scoring isn't going to be a problem, they scored 93 points with lots of room for improvement. I liked what I watched tonight, anxious for this season to start.

Don't count on a high scoring offense yet. Wait until we play a team with comparable talent and can play some defense:
gobearcats: Bearcats Take First Exhibition Contest, 93-63
Quote:"Our ball movement was tremendous," Cronin said. "Twenty-two assists. If we can keep that up all year, we'll be in business. You should be able to make shots when you're standing there playing h-o-r-s-e, taking wide open shots and you're on scholarship. I was really happy with the way we passed the basketball."

If this were UK, most would have 40-0 tattoos already.

There's only 5 or 6 teams on UC's schedule that has comparable talent so we should be in good shape

It is the best team Mick is going to have for a while, ship or bust dammit!
Seriously though, I think they're better equipped than his sweet 16 team.

I don't even think that it is a question. My fear is that this team will burn out early come March.

It's a possibility; final 4 contenders lose in the first round every year. This team is deeper and more balanced but I would probably take the upside of how good we were when SK, Cash, and Yancy were going good. I believe this team has enough talent where going to the Final 4 is realistic but the tournament is the world's largest crapshoot.
