Buffalo would be on my list of possible replacements should the AAC lose a bunch of schools, but they (at this point) are not a school worth going over 12 members for.
In my opinion, going over 12 would require the additional schools to add to the TV deal, which is something I don't think anyone but Army and BYU can do.

Charlotte has a history of playing many AAC schools and would give ECU an in-state rival, but at this point their football stadium is just too small. Charlotte and ODU are definitely schools worth watching in the long run.

RE: Could this be the AAC of the future?
Teams that would be worth going over 12 members for:
Anybody currently in the P5 (not going to happen unless the B12 disolvles)
Army
BYU
Select MWC schools if our TV partners want them
Teams that would be on my shortlist for getting back to 12 if the AAC lost members:
Buffalo
Charlotte
NIU
ODU
Ohio
Toledo
UMass
UTEP
...but 'who' would depend partially on who we lost.

Here is my list: Rice, Army, Air Force and Buffalo. This way the AAC will have both academically and athletically elite schools. Buffalo is AAU.

Basically, this.
I would have a big problem ever being in the same conference as Boise State. I was glad when I saw they changed their mind and pulled out.
But thankfully, it seems obvious that all of the AAC presidents/chancellors and athletic directors feel the same way.
Of the other MWC members, Air Force would be #1 with me. Followed by San Diego State if they get an OCS, or Colorado State if SDSU doesn't work out.

Tech has Zero TV Market?
The combined Shreveport/Texarkana and Monroe/El Dorado DMA's (Tech's geographic location is such that we actually straddle 2 DMA's) would rank at #58 in the country, and is larger than Tulsa #60, and Greenville 99.
If Tech isn't invited to some future version of the AAC, it will be because of our budget and attendance. It won't be for lack of TV market, academics, or competitiveness.

This is the kind of attitude that P5 schools have about Tulane and others. This is the problem that I am seeing that schools and some fans think they are better than another school which is prejudice. Boise State could beat Tulane in football and in basketball. They have one of the best tv audience which is rank better than most FBS schools on ESPN. They have a much better tv following than San Diego State, Air Force and San Diego State.

You'll never seen any combination of army, navy, or air force in the same conference.... how is this so hard for people to get?
