RE: Defensive Scheme
i just re-watched the game, painfully so, but I really wanted to dissect what the crap went on.
I know everyone was harping on the dl, as they should, but there was alot of play action and mostly the ru qb was getting ball out quickly (yes there was a few times he had an eternity), but he played his best game, even after taking some good licks from our d. What I saw was blown coverage assignments time and time again - with the safties/corners/outside linebackers arguing with each other after the plays were over. they were simply lost out there (pass coverage looked like MM last season). One thing i noticed - in passing situations we kept subbing in brown for wellons and vice versa - but many the sub was late and they would not know what d was called... At the end of the first half, ru reciever definitely pushed off of browns hip to create the separation on his long catch (of course no call.... and the pi call on oliver to set up their easy fg was bs).
I like Curtis Oliver, i think he will be great, but like T. Reynolds this was a growing up game for him. What I do not understand is why wouldn't we adust and put T. Reynolds on diggs. Oliver was on diggs the entire game it seemed and was getting torched. ru knew our defensive zone coverage like a bill bellichek spy... i watched many of the ru 10-20 yard completions came on a corners release to a safety, but there there would be no safety, or they would throw an in right at our point of zone release and the safety would be 5 yards away from the receiver. safety needs to have better vision and get there.. not necessarily the corners fault, but ALSO the coaches should have been able to coach that up / make some adjustments and even mask our coverages with halftime adjustments..
With the outside linebacker on their heels from the passing game, the running yards just started gashing us. gage steele led team with tackles, unfortunately all the tackles were down hill, green and the ol wore us out.
Like everone else stated, the onside kick was a kick to the nether regions. really, really bad. i told my wife in the stands to watch out for the onside kick before it happened and alas, when we only had two people within 10 yards of the ball, it was a no brainer for them to execute. bad, bad, special teams coaching - hard to put that on the players who had no chance on that play becuase of our stupid formations - hell we even had the one guy tapering off from the line for the blocking scheme. wtf over?
lastly, officiating did not cost us this game. hoewever; it was painfully obvious that we got called for holding and ru in many cases did not. There were 2-3 big poormond runs sprung by what looked like holding - we got called for it, they didn't. One thing I will point out though, poormond's dl players are better coached because even on one play where we got called for holding.... our players hands were on the inside, but the poormond player sold it by flailing and acting like he was being held.... also, i dont understand how we continue to have 3-4 false starts per game now that we are mid season.... are we changing the count - we run plays so fast that we should just stick to a count or a silent count, something.. vad almost always bailed us out of those extra 5 penalty yards, but it has to stop, esp. against wm this week.
