We have to come correct with pay for assistants and for him (think this is all very doable), but we also have to be in or damn close to getting in a P5. The downside of all of this and please remember this during the basketball season of our discontent is that financially to keep Fuente, Pastner has to stay.

Stop listening to Greg Gaston. He's biased because he's a Maryland alum

I am NOT listening to Greg Gaston, I am listening to someone who knows things. Maryland is a player on all of this, don't kid yourself.

What happens with Pastner will not even be a factor. I know people too buddy. Including one of the assistants

It's a factor for the money. Can't afford to do what it takes to keep Fuente and buy out Pastner. I have no doubt you know people too, just like I would be surprised if you or anyone else associated with the program disagrees with this.

I agree, to keep it "100%" we need to have one of these for every HC opening --- FBS, FCS, High school - the works. You know since they're all just as dumb.

So I saw something regarding one of the UCF assistants was supposed to replace him when he stepped down and there was a $700,000 buyout if they didnt. Wow

Arkansas State and UAB?

This is about schools Fuente wouldn't leave Memphis for, right?

I just get the feeling Fuente wants to raise his family in the center of the country.

This is the kind of thing I just don't understand about posts around here.

I thought Calipari would stay in Memphis because Ellen Calipari loved Memphis and her friends here!

Justin Fuente is a football coach. He wants to be where he can win and earn good money at it. I'm sure he can find a good community with good people, spiritual support, and great schools anywhere in the country. There is nothing in the middle of the country that's good or bad versus anywhere else. If he went to USC or Miami, he is a flight away (likely on a private jet) away from the middle of the country.

It's like this thing folks have between him and Gary Patterson. He worked for Patterson five seasons. He worked at Illinois State longer.

So I hope he stays. But if the iron is hot and Paxton declares (if he is a guaranteed first round pick he needs to take that money), if he can get a top tier job, he needs to go. I'm not taking South Carolina or Maryland where he's going up a mountain... I mean a job at a school that is (or positioned to be) a top program in a power conference.

That's USC. That's Miami.

RE: Fuente to UCF
UCF would be a good job for a Fuente-ish type of asst. coach out there.

I wonder what is the best scenario for filling a vacant job:
Following an old, tired coach
Following a hot coach that has moved on to another job
Following a retired legend (I guess this may or may not fall into the old, tired coach category)
Following a failed in his prime (age wise) coach
Following a good but scandalized coach

Calimari also knew the NCAA hammer was about to come down on us and skipped town ASAP, snow cone machine and all.

Not to say that Fuente won't leave, but it will be solely because of the opportunity to advance. Cal left for a higher profile job AND because he knew sanctions were coming. He may have even taken a slight step down had Kensucky not come calling just to avoid the mess he had created here.

Really? He could probably win there but of all the jobs I don't think he'd choose that one. Terrible facilities, super fairweather fanbase, historically don't pay coaches a lot, and I think Miami needs a showman type coach. In a James Franklin type mold. I wouldn't be shocked to see Fuente leave Memphis after this year but I'd think he'd have better options then the U.

Perhaps whether or not we can show up in force to a Tulane game on Halloween, not just an Ole Miss game on an average Saturday, may help coach Fuente decide if he can turn this into a truly "big-time" football school al-la TCU.

Now that you put it that way, I am more concerned thàn ever about Saturday. As another poster brought up, what about the Grizz home game? Yikes.

I haven't checked the Orpheum schedule, or any other civic scheduled events, but those also could be concerns affecting Saturday attendance. What about Mass...other denominational services held this Saturday?

I too think Coach Justin Fuente makes his decision on where he coaches next year based on this critical Halloween game this Saturday. Buckle up and do your part.

Make light if you want. As far as I'm concerned, there would be no more ambiguous (at the risk of being mis-interpreted) message sent to Justin than for him to walk into a half-filled stadium this Saturday with a 7-0 team that is ranked #16th in the nation.
