Bronco/Fleck Fans Should worry about UCF
I said it over the summer UCF is the one landing spot I'd worry about. Now that it's open and the Broncos are hitting their stride I think its fair to bring it up again.

With Florida ties and a "young cool" persona this is the type of coach UCF will e looking for. Given their utter collapse they will not have as big of a reservation with career record. This is the logical next step for Peej too. A step between MAC and P5, and UCF has a legit **** to win big without having to play a rugged schedule. This would give Fleck a shot then at a big P5 program if he succeeds at UCF. Much harder if you go the small P5 route to ever move up i.e. Purdue, Rutgers. This is similar to the Urban Meyer/Brian Kelly approach.

This is the one to worry about.

No chance, that is a lateral move at best. He will stay in the midwest.

Makes sense for UCF, but I agree with bossman68 that it doesn't make as much sense for Fleck. Why start all over when he's building something here (at least some people think he is)

Wouldn't surprise me too much if he took it if offered. UCF has plenty of money and he can win on a bigger scale quicker than here. Not sure if UCF would look his way at this point though.

RE: Bronco/Fleck Fans Should worry about UCF
It's a lateral move. If WMU was only paying Fleck $300,000 and that's as high as they could go -- I could see that as a possibility if we were to go 7+ wins in this overly tough year. But he's not a threat to be picked up by UCF due to his highest-MAC salary and him digging in and from the midwest, too... all while UCF is a lateral move to a more festive environment that has to be rebooted. If I were Fleck, I wouldn't want to do that unless they were going to pay me $1.5m+. Which, they theoretically could given the right circumstances, but I don't think the timing's aligned for that right now.

George Oleary is making $1.9 million. Not a lateral move. Coordinators at UCF are making about 300k. Not a lateral move. Position coaches are making 150-200k. Not a lateral move. Get to recruit the south. Not a lateral move. UCF campus, not a lateral move.

I think Lateral's meant by competition not $$. One could get Liberty University in the MAC and if they're spitting out tons of dough from Falwell and such, they could be paying their coaches $2m a year and one wouldn't call that scaling up.

If they offered to pay any MAC coach $1.5m - $2.0m, yeah, I think that MAC coach wouldn't mind taking a substantially higher-paid lateral move to rebuild a program. Although with UCF, I don't think a total REBUILD is in order, they just suddenly collapsed.

Illinois or Iowa St would be more likely.

Exactly it's got a lot better foundation than most. If they got 2-10, and Perj gets 9 wins by his second year, he'll be getting calls from top 20 funded programs. If he goes 10-2 at WMU wins the MAC, he's not getting those calls. He'd need to win the MAC 3-4 straight years to get those calls, and get to a quasi Boise level.

My point is. The good P5s with cash aren't ready to hire Fleck, but UCF, while a small step up in prestige can pay like a mid tier P5, and has several advantages over any MAC level job.

Neither AD is in a position to gamble on the record. Neither has enough capital among alums right now.

For all the "Midwest" talk, non of Peejs previous paid jobs have been midwest orientated. Only to be a Head Coach did he venture this way.

Tired about hearing about PJ, if he leaves, he leaves. WMU football will go on, its not like we're 7-0 and ranked in the top 10.

With the quality of jobs already open, this UCF search committee will certainly have Fleck on their short list of realistic candidates.

Wouldn't any school looking at the MAC have Campbell > Fleck at this point?

Other thing to keep in kind is that Fleck has been burned by Florida recruits a handful of times in these last couple recruiting classes. Do you think he will want to go to a place where he has to live that daily? I don't know the answer... but I still think it doesn't make much sense for him to have to start all over at a new place when he's barely created his "dream" here.

I think Campbell is a great coach. But Fleck can sell a turnaround, and Campbell cant and this is a team that will likely have an awful record.

I doubt another school will be so eager to let PJ paste his "Row the Boat" mantra on every piece of available real estate like wmu did, could be a barrier for PJ. Most schools have too much self respect for that.

I don't think that'll factor into a decision for the schools.

His next job could a many year commitment so I would think that family and his Chicago ties would be important in his location
