You are correct. Rice fans are having the same debate with David Bailiff. Exemplary man, a great Ambassador for Rice, and well-liked by everyone. But is he taking the Rice football program to higher levels with his game day results?

Sometimes, one has to step back and ask how high the ceiling really is, though. I want to think Rice's ceiling has some lift to it, but when I see bodybag games like Baylor, Notre Dame, Aggee, UCLA...hell, even that '06 gauntlet of Florida State, UCLA and Texas all on the road, I wonder how seriously the folks up high take the program. Hell, cut Texas off the schedule if all you are doing is showboating for them at Reliant.
I expect that kind of stuff when UH had ~45 players on scholarship back in their probation days and they were exploring closing down the football program or you just happen to be Idaho looking for money grabs. Otherwise, just pull a Vandy, "shut" the AD down, and merge with student life and have the school write checks for the football team right out of the endowment if you can get away with it. Make that $5.5B work in your favor.

VU athletics programs are now funded by the University's multi-billion dollar endowment...one of the largest in the world. VU is ADDING SIX varsity sports as a result of the direct access to VU's financial strength.
